Pattern Notes

Mattress stitch motifs together to create an invisible seam: With wrong sides together of the motifs;

  1. Using a yarn needle begin by working into the two corner chains. The needle should go in through the top of the first corner chain (between the two loops or ‘v’) and then out through the top of the second corner chain.
  2. Pull the yarn through and then do exactly the same thing into the motif you are joining too. Into the top of the first corner chain and out of the top of the second corner chain.
  3. Go back to the first square and insert the needle into the top of the second corner stitch.  (e.g the needle will go into the same place it came out of last time.)
    Bring the needle out of the top of the next stitch; come up under the back loop from behind.)
  4. Do exactly the same thing on the other motif; the needle goes into the top of the chain (where the yarn came out before) and up out of the top of the next stitch.
  5. Continue in this way, going back and forth between the motifs, inserting the needle into the top of the stitch where the yarn is coming out and then back up out of the next stitch (in effect you’re working into the back loops only).
  6. As you pull the mattress stitches tight, the motifs will come together and the yarn you’ve used to join the motifs will be practically invisible.

Finishing

Use mattress stitch to join each of your motifs together, using schematic, to create the wrap; the wrap should consist of 5 motifs wide and 16 motifs long with coloured motifs placed as shown.

Edging

Attach CC1 to any corner sp, ch 1 (doesn’t count as a st), sc in each st, working (sc, sc3tog, sc) over each motif seam and (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) into each ch-2 corner sp.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Blocking

The design of this wrap may benefit from being wet blocked.

  1. Completely soak your item in cold water then gently squeeze (without wringing it) out some of the excess water.
  2. Using your tape measure and pins carefully pin your item on your blocking board.
  3. Double check your measurements if necessary (e.g check the height and width are correct).
  4. Leave to dry completely over 24 hours, and then unpin.
