Sea To It Shawl

Textured shell stitches, a netted border and finished with shell stitches resembling small crowns complete the mermaid princess look. This shawl is made starting from the top down which is always fun when tracking your progress.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 55” across x 24” down measuring from the center after wet blocking

Gauge: 4 shells and 18 rows = 4” [10 cm] after wet blocking

Materials

Lace weight yarnYarn: Aunt Lydias Classic 10 crochet thread (100% Mercerized Cotton; 350 yards [320 meters]90 grams): Aqua (3 balls)

Hook: US size E/4 (3.5 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch markers (optional)

Special Stitches

Shell – Work 7 dc in st indicated.

LShell – (Large Shell), work 9 dc in st indicated.

Picot – Ch 3, sl st in first ch.

Pattern Notes

Shawl is worked from the top down in rows. As you go along each row gets shorter to form the triangle shape. Netted border is worked in rows and added after the middle section is completed.

Pattern

Note: Use stitch markers to help keep track of your stitch counts for Row 1.

Row 1: Work 361 fsc.
Row 2 (RS): Ch 1, sc in first fsc, *sk next 3 fsc, shell in next fsc, sk next 3 fsc, sc in next fsc; rep from * across. (45 shells at end of this row)
Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sl st in same st, sl st in next 3 sts, sc in next st, cont to sc across, leaving last 4 sts unworked.

Note: From here and throughout pattern all even rows will be worked in blo.

Row 4: Ch 1, turn, now working in blo, sc in same st, *sk next 3 sc, shell in next sc, sk next 3 sc, sc in next sc; rep from * across, leaving last 4 sts unworked. (44 shells)

Rows 5-90: Rep Rows 3-4.

Note: When working the shell rows, you will be decreasing by one shell for each of these rows until you end up with one shell left.

Row 91: Ch 1, turn, sc in same st, cont to sc across. (9 sc at end of this row)
Fasten off.

Border

Row 1: With RS facing and working on other side of Row 1, attach yarn in first sc, ch 1, sc in same st, *sk next 3 st, shell in next st (Note: Your shell and sc stitches should be worked in the shell and sc stitches from the other side of Row 1), sk next 3 st, sc in next st; rep from * across, do not fasten off at end of this row. (45 shells)

Row 1 Cont: Ch 3, sc in same st, (Note: Now working down sides of shawl), ch 7, sk next 3 dc, sc in next sc, *sk next 3 st, shell in next st (Note: Your shell and sc stitches should be worked in the shell and sc stitches from the other side of Row 1), sk next 3 st, sc in next st; rep from * across, making sure you work on the other side of the shawl, ch 3, join in first st. (90 ch-7 sp and 2 ch-3 sp)

Row 2: Turn, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc in next ch-7 sp, *ch 9, sc in next ch-7 sp; rep from * across to last ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc in ch-3 sp. (89 ch-9 sp and 2 ch-3)

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, sc in same st, ch 3, sc in next ch-3 sp, *ch 9, sc in next ch-9 sp; rep from * across, ch 9, sc in ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc in last sc. (90 ch-9 sp and 2 ch-3)

Row 4: Ch 1, turn, sc in same st, ch 3, sc in next ch-3 sp, *ch 9, sc in next ch-9 sp; rep from * across, ch 9, sc in ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc in last sc. (91 ch-9 sp and 2 ch-3 sp)

Row 5: Ch 3, turn, 4 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 5, sc in next ch-9 sp, ch 5, *work Lshell in next ch-9 sp, ch 5, sc in next ch-9 sp, ch 5; rep from * across, work 4 dc in next ch-3 sp, dc in last st. (45 Lshells, 92 ch-5 sp)

Row 6: Ch 3, turn, dc in next 4 dc, sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 3, sc in next ch-5 sp, *dc in next 9 dc, sc in next ch-5 sp, ch 3, sc in next ch-5 sp; rep from * across, dc in last 5 dc. (46 ch 3 sp)

Row 7: Ch 3, turn, sk next dc, (2 dc, picot, 2 dc) in next dc, ch 5, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 5, *sk next 2 dc in Lshell, dc in next 2 dc, (2 dc, picot, 2 dc) in next dc, dc in next 2 dc, ch 5, sc in next ch-3 sp, ch 5; rep from * across to last shell, sk next 2 dc, dc in next dc, (2 dc, picot, 2 dc) in next dc, dc in last st.

Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in all loose ends.

Wet block shawl.
