Cherie is an intermediate pattern for a cozy wrap that will comfort you on cool mornings in autumn and winter. Creating plaid with strategically placed motifs, this wrap is trendy with a pink and gray color palette and a fringe finish.

Yarn: Stylecraft Special Aran (100% acrylic; 214 yards [196 meters]/100 grams): #1080 Pale Rose (A, 3 balls), #1063 Graphite (B, 3 balls), #1203 Silver (C, 3 balls), #905 White (D, 2 balls), #1832 Mushroom (E, 2 balls)

Hook: US size H/8 (5 mm)

Special Stitches

Standing Double Crochet: Place a slip knot on your hook, yarn over, insert hook in stitch where you want to make first dc, yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), [yarn over and draw through 2 loops] twice.

Pattern Notes

Starting a new round: The ch 3 counts as the first dc. You may wish to replace the ch 3 with a standing double crochet to join a new ball of yarn or a new color where relevant.

Color Changing (cc): To change color, work in old color up to last yarn over of current stitch, then with new color, yarn over and complete the stitch. Change colors in this manner whenever indicated in the pattern.

Carry the unused colored strands along the wrong side of the work loosely so that the work does not gather. Crochet over the unused color strands as they are carried along; this will hide the strands and eliminate long unused floats.

Tassels: Fold two strands of yarn in half so that there’s a U-shaped bend on one side and 4 ‘tails’ on the other side. Insert your hook around a stitch, catch  the bend of the yarn with the hook, pull the folded end of the yarn under the stitch taking care not to pull the yarn all the way through.

The ends of the yarn should remain on the opposite side of the stitch as the folded end.  Open up the fold of the yarn so that you have a loop. Insert the tail ends of yarn into the loop. Pull the ends of the yarn tightly to cinch the loop down into a knot.

Pattern

Make 40 motifs.

With A, ch 4, sl st to form a ring, sl st into the ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, ch 3, [3 dc in ring, ch 3] 3 times, sl st in top of beg ch 3 to join, then sl st to the nearest ch-3 corner sp. (12 dc, 4 ch-3 sps)

Rnd 2: Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same sp (corner made), [(3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp (corner made)] 3 times, sl sl st in top of beg ch 3 to join, then sl st to the nearest ch-3 corner. (24 dc, 4 ch-3 sps)

Rnd 3: Ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in same sp (corner made), [3 dc in the sp between the clusters of the last rnd, (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) in next ch-3 sp (corner made)] 3 times, sl st in top of beg ch 3 to join. (36 dc, 4 ch-3 sps)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Rnd 4: Join B in the last dc of a cluster before a ch-3 corner, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in ch-3 sp, [dc in the next st, cc to C, dc in next 7 sts, cc to B, dc in next st, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp] 3 times, dc in next st, cc to C, dc in next 7 sts, cc to B, sl st in top of beg ch 3 to join. (52 sts, 4 ch-3 sps)

Rnd 5: Ch 3, dc in next 2 sts, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp, [dc in next 3 sts, cc to C, dc in next 7 sts, cc to B, dc in next 3 sts, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp] 3 times, dc in next 3 sts, cc to C, dc in next 7 sts, cc to B, sl st in top of beg ch 3 to join. (68 sts, 4 ch-3 sps)

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Rnd 6: Join D in the last dc before a ch-3 corner, ch 3, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp, [dc in next st, cc to C, dc in next 4 sts, cc to E, dc in next 7 sts, cc to C, dc in next 4 sts, cc to D, dc in next st, (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp] 3 times, dc in next st, cc to C, dc in next 4 sts, cc to E, dc in next 7 sts, cc to C, dc in next 4 sts, cc to D, sl st in top of beg ch 3 to join. Finishing

Whipstitch the motifs together, using corresponding yarn colors, to create the wrap with 4 motifs across and 10 motifs long.

Edging

Join B in any corner sp.

Ch 3, dc in each st, working (dc, dc3tog, dc) over each motif seam (see image below), and (2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in each ch-3 corner sp.

Fringe

Cut 156 lengths of 12” [30 cm] of Bn. Add tassels to both short ends of your wrap to finish; first add a tassel to each end corner space, then add a tassel to every 3rd st from either end.
