Arctic Burst Color-Dipped Mittens

Gauge: 14 sts and 16 rows = 4” [10 cm] in sc st after wet blocking

Medium weight yarnYarn: Ice yarns (100% Acrylic; 229 yards [210 meters] / 3.53 ounces [100 grams]):

Child: Light Blue (MC), Lemon Yellow (CC1), Rose Pink (CC2)

Teen: Rose Pink (MC), Lemon Yellow (CC1), Gold (CC2)

One ball in each of 3 colors can make both child and teen mittens

Hook: US size I/9 5.5 mm

Notions: removable markers, tapestry needle

Abbreviations

Fphdc – front post half double crochet

BLO – back loop only

Beg – beginning

Special Stitches

Fphdc2tog – [Yarn over, Insert the hook from front to back to front around the post of the next st, yarn over, pull up a loop] 2 times, yarn over, and pull back through all 5 loops on the hook.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked in the round. Starts from the wrist and makes the body of the mittens while making a thumb hole. The mittens close by decreasing at the top, finally making a thumb and ribbed cuff.

The mittens feature fphdc and chains. Every fphdc working into the unworked sts two rounds below.

Beg ch does not count as st.

When working body of the mittens add a stitch marker on the first st.

It is good to weave ends before starting with next color.

Pattern (make 2)

Hand Part

(MC) Ch 28 (32), sl st to the first ch to make a loop. (Be careful not to twist)

Round 1: Ch 1 (does not count as a st here and throughout), hdc in each st around, join with sl st in first hdc. (28 (32) hdc)

Round 2: Ch 1, fphdc in first st, *ch 1, sk next st, fphdc in next st; rep from * around, omitting final fphdc, join with sl st in first fphdc. (14 (16) fphdc) 

Round 3: (See notes on fphdc) Ch 1, sk first fphdc, *fphdc in next hdc (unworked st below), ch 1, sk next fphdc; rep from * around, join with sl st in first fphdc. (14 (16) fphdc)

Round 4-5 (4-7): Ch 1, sk first st, *fphdc in next st (unworked st below), ch 1, sk next st; rep from * around, join with sl st in first fphdc.

Round 6 (8): Ch 1, sk first st, fphdc in next st (unworked st below) (add stitch marker on the stitch), ch 5 (7), sk next 3 (4) fphdc of the previous round, fphdc in next st (unworked st below) (thumb hole made), *ch 1, sk next st, fphdc in next st (unworked st below); rep from * around, join with sl st in first fphdc. (12 (13) fphdc) 

Round 7 (9): Ch 1, sk first st, hdc in each of next ch 5 (7), *ch 1, sk next st, fphdc in next st (unworked st below); rep from * around, join with sl st in first hdc. (5 (7) hdc, 11 (12) fphdc)

Round 8 (10): Ch 1, sk first hdc, fphdc in next hdc, [ch 1, sk next st, fphdc in next hdc] 1 (2) times, *ch 1, sk next st, working into the unworked sts two rounds below work fphdc in next st; rep from * around, last fphdc should be in marked stitch, do not remove stitch marker, join with sl st in first fphdc. Round 9 (11): Ch 1, sk first st, fphdc in next hdc st, [ch 1, sk next st, fphdc in next hdc st] 1 (2) times, [ch 1, sk next st, fphdc in next st (unworked st below)] 11 (12) times, ch 1, sk next st, fphdc in next hdc st, ch 1, join with sl st in first fphdc. (14 (16) fphdc)

Round 10-12 (12-14): Ch 1, sk first st, *fphdc in next st (unworked st below), ch 1, sk next st; rep from * around, join with sl st in first fphdc.

Fasten off and weave the end.

Join (CC1) yarn at the first st of the previous round.

Round 13-24 (15-29): Ch 1, sk first st, *fphdc in next st (unworked st below), ch 1, sk next st; rep from * around, join with sl st in first fphdc. (14 (16) fphdc)

Round 25 (30): Ch 1, * working into the unworked sts two rounds below work fphdc2tog, ch 1; rep from * around, join with sl st in first fphdc2tog. (7 (8) fphdc2tog)

Round 26 (31): Ch 1, sk first fphdc2tog, *fphdc in next st (unworked st below), ch 1, sk next fphdc2tog; rep from * around, join with sl st in first fphdc. (7 (8) fphdc) 

Round 27 (32): Ch 1, *fphdc in next fphdc2tog st 2 rounds below; rep from * around, join with sl st in first fphdc. (7 (8) fphdc)

Leaving a long yarn tail, fasten off.

Thumb Part

(If you are a right handed, crochet clockwise. If you are a left-handed, crochet counter-clockwise) Round 5 (7)

Round 1 (crochet fphdc around the thumb opening including hdc, fphdc in previous and unworked st two rounds below except side fphdc): (MC) On the thumb opening, join the yarn at side fphdc (marked stitch in hand round 6 (8)), ch 1, crochet hdc in the same side fphdc st, fphdc in each of next 5 (7) st, hdc in next side fphdc, fphdc in each of next 5 (7) st, join with sl st in first st. (12 (16) sts)

Round 2-4 (2-5): Ch 1, fphdc in each st around, join with sl st in first fphdc. (12 (16) fphdc)

Round 5 (6): Ch 1, fphdc2tog in each st around, join with sl st in first fphdc2tog. (6 (8) fphdc2tog)

Round 6 (7): Ch 1, fphdc2tog in each st around, join with sl st in first fphdc2tog. (3 (4) fphdc2tog)

Leaving a long yarn tail, fasten off.

Double Ribbed Cuff

Leaving 15” long yarn tail, join (CC2) yarn at one of the remaining loops in the foundation chain of the mitten.

Ch 21.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from the hook, sc in each of next 19 st, sl st in next 2 loops in the foundation chain of the mitten, turn the work. (20 sc)

Row 2: Sk sl sts, sc in BL of each st across, turn the work. (20 sc)

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in BL of each st across, sl st in next 2 loops in the foundation chain of the mitten, turn the work. (20 sc)

Repeat rows 2 and 3 continuously around the mitten until there are 28 (32) rows.

Fasten off.

Finishing

Close the top of the mittens: Insert the tapestry needle through the yarn tail, weave through the spaces between fphdc in the last round, pull the yarn tightly and close the top of the mittens and fasten securely.

Close the top of the thumb: Insert the tapestry needle through the yarn tail, weave through the spaces between fphdc in the last round, pull the yarn tightly and close the top of the thumb and fasten securely.

Ribbed cuff: Sew short rows together using the tapestry needle and the yarn tail. Weave the end. Fold the cuff in half.
