Winter Winds Slouchy Hat

The Winter Winds Slouchy Hat is a great addition to your cold-weather wardrobe. Made in a blue and grey self-striping colorway, this intermediate beanie looks great with any winter coat.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: Circumference = 22”

Gauge: 16 sts x 8 rows= 4” square in dc

Materials

Yarn:

Medium Weight Yarn Bernat Vickie Howell Sheep(ish) (70% cotton, 30% wool; 137 yards [125 meters]/68 grams): Stripes Nightish (1 skein)

Hook: US size H/8 (5.0 mm) hook, or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions: Yarn needle, medium button, sewing thread & needle

Pattern Notes

The hat is worked two parts: brim and the top is added directly onto the brim.
Please check your gauge.
You can substitute the yarn for any worsted weight #4.

Pattern

Brim

Using Color A (Gray), ch 7.
Row 1: Sc in the first chain and in each across. (6 sts)
Row 2: Turn, ch 1, working in the back loop, sc in each stitch.
Row 3: Turn, ch 1, working in the front loop, sc in each stitch.
Rows 4-53: Repeat Rows 2 & 3.
*Note: Row 53 is the edge of the brim, and will be joined with the first row here.
Row 54: (This begins the strap.) Turn, ch 1, working in the back loop, sc dec, sc 2, sc dec. (4 sts)
Row 55: Turn, ch 1, working in the front loop, sc 4.
Row 56: Turn, ch 1, working in the back loop, sc 4.
Rows 57-58: Repeat Rows 55 & 56.
Row 59: Turn, ch 1, working in the front loop, sc, ch 2, skip 2, sc in the last stitch.
Row 60: Turn, ch 1, working in the back loop, sc, 2 sc in the ch 2 space, sc in last stitch (button hole completed).
Row 61: Turn, ch 1, working in the front loop: sc4.
Row 62: Turn, ch 1, working in the back loop: sc decrease 2 times. (2 sts)
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Using the yarn needle, sew Row 53 to the first row. Sew the button down and slip the strip over to finish brim.
On one side, join Color A, ch1, use the ends of the rows as stitches, sc in each stitch, sl st to ch1 to join. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Top

Rnd 1: Join Color B (Night) at seam, use the ends of the rows as stitches, ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in the same stitch, * skip 1 stitch, 2 dc in the next stitch, repeat from * to complete round, do not join.
Rnds 2-17: 2 dc in between each 2 dc to compete the round.
To finish, sc to the next stitch. Fasten off, leaving a long tail.
With the wrong side facing out, fold hat in half. Using the yarn needle, tie together in center.
Pull the middle of each sides in and tie them in the center with the previous knot.
Pull the center of each rounded part in and tie in center. Fasten off.
To finish, turn hat right side out.

    I am trying to find the pattern that is featured on the cover, can anyone help me?

    The yarn to be used says Vickie Howell Sheep(ish) Stripes Nightish (1 skein) but then you scroll down to the instructions and it reads “Color A (Gray)” and further on “Color B(Night)”.
    So, do you actually need to buy 2 additional skeins of a gray and a night or is this discontinued and use a substitute?
