Cascade 220 Superwash (100% Wool; 220 yards [201 meters]/100 grams): 873 Extra Crème Cafe (Color A), 2 balls; 880 Marionberry (Color B), 1 ball
Hook: US size G/6 (4.0 mm); US size 7 (4.5 mm)
Notions: Removable markers; tapestry needle
Special Stitches
Spider Stitch
Work (sc, ch 1, sc) in next ch-1 sp, *skip next 2 sc, (sc, ch 1, sc) in next ch-1 sp; rep from * to end of rnd.
Pattern Notes
The hat is worked from the bottom to the top in rounds in a spiral with no turning or joining of the rounds, and then sewed together. The mittens are worked from the cuff up. The cuff ribbing is worked flat and the stitches of the mittens body are worked in rows, and then sewn together. Thumb is worked separately in the round.
Hat Pattern
Ribbing
With Color A and smaller hook, ch 11.
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across row, turn – 9 sts.
Row 2: Ch 2, *hdc through backloop only in each ch across row, turn – 9 sts.
Row 3: Rep Row 2.
Cont in Ribbing until piece measures 19” [48 cm].
Fold ribbing in half and stitch closed using slip stitches or your preferred method.
Change to larger hook.
Body
With Color A.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each st across row, making sure to end up with an odd number of sts, sl st to join – 77 sts.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, (sc, ch 1, sc) in same ch, *skip 1 st, (sc, ch 1, sc) in next st; rep from * across to end of rnd. Do NOT join but continue working in the round – 40 pattern repeats and 37 skipped sts.
Rnd 3: Skip first sc, work (sc, ch 1, sc) in next ch-1 sp, *skip next 2 sc, (sc, ch 1, sc) in next ch-1 sp; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep Rnd 3 until piece meas 6” [15 cm].
Change to Color B and continue working in established pattern until hat meas 9” [23 cm].
Fasten off leaving a long tail approx 8” [20 cm] long.
Finishing
Using your tapestry needle, use a running stitch to gather the top row of sts together using the tail of Color B left. Pull tight to close. Fasten off.
Mittens (make 2)
Ribbing
With Color A and smaller hook, ch 11.
Row 1: Hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across row, turn – 9 sts.
Row 2: Ch 2, *hdc through backloop in each ch across row, turn – 9 sts.
Row 3: Rep Row 2.
Cont in Ribbing until piece meas 7” [18 cm].
Change to larger hook.
Body
With Color A.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in each st across row, making sure you end up in an odd number of sts, sl st to join – 31 sts.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, (sc, ch 1, sc) in same ch, *skip 1 st, (sc, ch 1, sc) in next st; rep from * to end of rnd. Do NOT join but continue working in the rnd – 6 pattern repeats and 14 skipped sts.
Rnd 3: Skip first sc, work (sc, ch 1, sc) in next ch-1 sp, *skip next 2 sc, (sc, ch 1, sc) in next ch-1 sp; rep from * to end of rnd.
Rep Rnd 3 until piece meas 6” [15 cm].
Change to Color B and continue working in established pattern until piece meas 8½” [22 cm].
Fasten off leaving a long tail approx 8” [20 cm].
Thumb
Using removable markers mark thumb position.
Attach Color A and start working single crochet sts (11-13 sts), making sure you end up in an odd number of sts.
Start working Spider Stitch in the round without joining. Sl st to first ch-1 sp, work Spider Stitch in same ch-1 sp – (7-9 Spider Stitch repeats and 6-7 skipped sts).
Work in Spider Stitch for 7 more rnds or until the piece covers your thumb.
Fasten off leaving a long tail.
With your tapestry needle and using a running stitch, gather the top row of sts together using the tail of Color A left. Pull tight to close. Fasten off.
Note: Do Not worry if you do not have the exact stitch count for the thumb. Just work Spider Stitch for a few rounds until you reach your thumb length.
Finishing
Fold Mittens in half and sew together. Sew top of mittens closed using a running stitch to gather the top row of stitches together.
Fasten off.
