Town Square Cowl

This cowl features large and small granny squares joined together to make a button-front cowl. Paired with a jean jacket, this cowl will keep your neck warm and your outfit on point!

Skill Level: Easy

Size: 10” x 40”

Gauge: 18 sts and 24 rows = 4” [10 cm] in St st after wet blocking

Materials

Yarn: Berroco Vintage Chunky (52% Acrylic, 40% Wool, 8% Nylon; 136 yards [125 meters]/100 grams): 6190 Aubergine (MC, 2 balls), 6167 Dewberry  (CC1, 1 ball), 6123 Blush  (CC2, 1 ball)

Hook: US size J/10 (6.0 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle, three 1.25” buttons

Patten Notes

The cowl is made up of large and small granny squares joined together. The chain spaces at the border serves as button holes.

Pattern

Small Square (make 4)

Rnd 1: With CC1, ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring, ch 5 (counts as first dc and ch 2 here and throughout), (3 dc, ch 2) 3 times in ring, 2 dc in ring, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-5. (3 dc on each side, ch-2 on each corner)

Rnd 2: With CC2, sl st into ch-2 corner sp, ch 5, 3 dc in same ch-2 corner sp, [ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 corner sp] 3 times, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-2 corner sp, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-5. (2 sets of 3 dc on each side, ch-2 on each corner)

Rnd 3: With MC, sl st into ch-2 corner sp, ch 5, 3 dc in same ch-2 corner sp, [ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 corner sp] 3 times, ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-2 corner sp, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-5. (3 sets of 3 dc on each side, ch-2 on each corner)

Rnd 4: Sl st into ch-2 corner sp, ch 5, 3 dc in same ch-2 corner sp, [(ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 2 times, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 corner sp] 3 times, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 2 times, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-2 corner sp, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-5. (4 sets of 3 dc on each side, ch-2 on each corner)

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Large Square (make 3)

Rnds 1-4: Work the same as for Small Square.
Rnd 5: Sl st into ch-2 corner sp, ch 5, 3 dc in same ch-2 corner sp, [(ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 3 times, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 corner sp] 3 times, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 3 times, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-2 corner sp, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-5. (5 sets of 3 dc on each side, ch-2 on each corner)

Rnd 6: Sl st into ch-2 corner sp, ch 5, 3 dc in same ch-2 corner sp, [(ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 4 times, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 corner sp] 4 times, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 3 times, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-2 corner sp, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-5. (6 sets of 3 dc on each side, ch-2 on each corner)

Rnd 7: Sl st into ch-2 corner sp, ch 5, 3 dc in same ch-2 corner sp, [(ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 5 times, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 corner sp] 5 times, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 3 times, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-2 corner sp, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-5. (7 sets of 3 dc on each side, ch-2 on each corner)

Rnd 8: Sl st into ch-2 corner sp, ch 5, 3 dc in same ch-2 corner sp, [(ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 6 times, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-2 corner sp] 6 times, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) 3 times, ch 1, 2 dc in next ch-2 corner sp, sl st to 3rd ch of beginning ch-5. Fasten off. Weave in ends

Seaming

Seam pieces together as shown in schematic

Border

Rnd 1: Join CC2 to any ch-2 corner, ch 3, 2 sc in same ch-2 corner, [sc in each st to next ch-2 corner, (2 sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in ch-2 corner sp] 3 times, sc in each st to first ch-2 corner, 2 sc in ch-2 corner sp, sl st to 2nd ch of beginning ch-3.

Fasten off

Rnd 2: Join CC1 to any ch-2 corner, ch 3, sc in same ch-2 corner, [sc in each st to next ch-2 corner, (sc, ch 2, sc) in ch-2 corner] 3 times, sc in each st to first ch-2 corner, sc in ch-2 corner, sl st to 2nd ch of beginning ch-3.

Fasten off.

Finishing

Attach buttons to Cowl.

Weave in all ends.
