Belle of the Bow Cowl

Bold and cozy, you’ll enjoy the construction of this playful cowl that’s perfect for the season. Best of all?  It will only take you a few hours to crochet, making it a great last-minute gift!

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 30” around x 7” wide

Gauge: 8 sts and 4 rows = 4” [10 cm] in dc

Materials

Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver Chunky (100% Acrylic; 173 yards [158 meters]/141 grams): 378 Claret (Color A, 1 skein), 400 Grey Heather (Color B, 1 skein)

 

Hook: US size M/N (9.0 mm)

Special Stitches

blo – back loop only

working into the 3rd loop of a hdc st – work into the horizontal bar on the back of the hdc st, behind both the front and back loops

FDC (foundation double crochet) 

First FDC

Ch 3, yo, insert hook into ch furthest from hook, yo, pull up a lp, yo, pull through first lp on hook (this acts as the starting ch for this st). Yo, pull through 2 lps, yo, pull through last 2 lps on hook, as when making a dc st (this completes the first FDC).

Subsequent FDC

Yo, insert hook into V at bottom of previous st, yo, pull up a lp, then yo, pull through first lp on hook, yo, pull through 2 lps, yo, pull through last 2 lps on hook, as when making a dc st.

Pattern Notes

Leave a 6” tail at the beginning of the cowl and use this tail to sew closed the bottom of the first round.

With A, ch 66.

Rnd 1: Dc in the 4th ch from the hook (skipped 3 chs count as first dc of rnd), dc in each ch across, join with sl st in top of skipped 3 chs. (64 dc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, hdc in each st around, join.

Rnd 3: Sl st in blo of first st, ch 4 (counts as first tr of rnd), tr in 3rd loop of each st around, join.

Rnd 4: Rep Rnd 2.

Rnd 5: Ch 1, hdc in 3rd loop of each st around, join.

Rnd 6: Rep Rnd 3.

Rnd 7: Rep Rnd 2.

Rnd 8: Ch 1, sc in 3rd loop of each st around, join.

Rnd 9: Ch 3 (counts as first dc of rnd), dc in each st around, join.

Fasten off.

Ribbons (make 2)

Row 1: With B, FDC 52.

Fasten off leaving a 10” tail.

Bow

With B, ch 9.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from the hook and each ch across, turn. (8 sc)

Rows 2-3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (8 sc)

Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first 3 sts, sc2tog, sc in last 3 sts, turn. (7 sc)

Row 5: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sts, sc3tog, sc in last 2 sts, turn. (5 sc)

Row 6: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc3tog, sc in last st, turn. (3 sc)

Row 7: Ch 1, sc in first st, 3 sc in next st, sc in last st, turn. (5 sc)

Row 8: Ch 1, sc in first 2 sts, 3 sc in next st, sc in last 2 sts, turn. (7 sc)

Row 9: Ch 1, sc in first 3 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in last 3 sts, turn. (8 sc)

Rows 10-11: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn. (8 sc)

Edging: Ch 1, sc evenly around Bow, working a ch 1 at each corner, join.

Fasten off.

Bow Tie

With B, ch 6.

Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and each ch across, turn. (5 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each st across.

Break yarn leaving a 10” tail.

Finishing

Assembly

Step 1: Using B, work a row of surface crochet between Cowl Rnds 4 and 5, join. Fasten off.

Step 2: Weave the Ribbons through Rnds 3 and 6, going between every 4 sts. Using the 10” tail, sew the ends of each Ribbon together and move the seam to the inside of the Cowl.

Step 3: Sew the Bow Tie around the center of the Bow, using the 10” tail. Then, use the same tail to sew the Bow to the surface crochet Rnd made in Step 1, as shown.

Weave in all ends.
