Go-To Gingham Bag

Take a simple crochet bag to the next level with this easy technique. The classic gingham style looks stunning in blacks and grays and pairs well with spring pastels.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: about 14” wide x 14” tall (not including handles)

Gauge: 24 sts and 24 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Moss St

Materials

Fine weight yarnYarn: Knit Picks Brava Sport (100% Acrylic; 273 yards [250 meters]/100 grams): 25663 Black (C1, 3 balls), 26369 Silver (C2, 3 balls), 25664 White (C3, 3 balls)

Hook: US size D/3 (3.25 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle, (optional) 60” jute or rope

Special Stitches

Moss St (worked over an even number of sts)

Row 1: *Sc in next st, hdc in next st; rep from * to end of row, turn.

Rep Row 1 for patt.

Pattern Notes

This pattern is worked flat in pieces and seamed together.

When changing color, work to the st indicated as normal to last 2 lps on hook, pick up new color and finish the st.

Pattern

Front

With C1, fsc 80.

Note: If you would prefer not to work a fsc, instead ch 81, sk first ch, *sc in next ch, hdc in next ch; rep from * to end.
Row 1 (RS): With C2, ch 1, work next 16 sts in Moss St, (with C1 work next 16 sts in Moss St, with C2 work 16 sts in Moss St) twice, turn.
Row 2 (WS): Rep Row 1.

Rows 3-12: Rep Rows 1-2.

Row 13 (RS): With C3, ch 1, work next 16 sts in Moss St, (with C2 work next 16 sts in Moss St, with C3 work 16 sts in Moss St) twice, turn.

Row 14 (WS): Rep Row 13.

Rows 15-24: Rep Rows 13-14.

Rep Rows 1-24, 3 more times.
With C1, work in Moss St to end of row.

Fasten off.

Back

Work same as Front.

Handle (make 2)

With C1, ch 109.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch to end of row, turn. (108 sts)

Row 2: *Ch 1, work in Moss St to end of row, turn.

Rows 3-6: Rep Row 2.

Row 7: Ch 1, sc in each st across.
Fasten off.

Add jute or rope to the handle (optional)

Note: This makes for a sturdy handle. If you don’t want to add the jute or rope, skip to Finishing.

Cut a piece of jute about 0.5” shorter than handle and place in center of hanlde. Fold handle to encase jute and slip stitch to seam along long edge, leaving about 0.25” unseamed at both ends of handle. Work same for second handle.

Finishing

With RS of Front and Back facing, seam sides and bottom.

Attach handle, using photo as a guide.

Weave in all ends.

    Why are there no instructions for the Moss Stitch for those of us who’ve never done it as well as pictures of the steps as you are making the bag.
