Celebrating a Decade of Creativity: I Like Crochet’s 10th Birthday

Can you believe it’s been 10 years since the launch of I Like Crochet? Time has flown by, and as the saying goes, “time flies when you’re having fun.” Both Caitlin and I can wholeheartedly say that working on I Like Crochet has been an absolute blast over this past decade. We are amazed at how quickly the years have passed and grateful for the journey we’ve shared with our readers, designers, and the entire crochet community.

The world of crochet has evolved significantly over the past ten years, and we’ve loved being part of the journey through various trends, techniques, styles, and innovations. The landscape of crochet has become richer and more diverse, with new patterns and ideas constantly emerging. Being able to witness and contribute to this evolution has been a rewarding experience.

To celebrate our 10-year milestone, we each set out to choose five of our favorite patterns—a task that was far from easy! Over the years, we’ve published hundreds of patterns, each one unique and special in its own way. Narrowing it down to just five each was nearly impossible because each pattern holds a piece of our history and creativity. However, we managed to select a diverse collection that represents our journey and the wonderful work of our talented designers.

The pieces we chose for our 10th birthday reflect not just our personal favorites but also our goals and crochet dreams. Each pattern tells a story, embodies a technique, or highlights a trend that was significant at the time of its creation. We hope you enjoy exploring our top picks, learning about why we chose them, and gaining insight into the design process.

We are incredibly proud of all our designers’ hard work over the years. Their dedication, creativity, and passion have made I Like Crochet what it is today. We pour our hearts into our work, and we’re so glad to have you along for the ride. Your support and enthusiasm have been the driving force behind our success, and we look forward to continuing this journey together.

Here’s to the next 10 years of crochet adventures, innovative designs, and a vibrant, ever-growing community. We can’t wait to see what the future holds and to continue sharing our love for crochet with all of you. Thank you for being a part of our story and for celebrating this milestone with us.

Alpenglow Cardigan by Olya Mikesh
“I believe crochet tells a story and serves as a powerful form of self-expression. This cardigan, in particular, breaks away from conventional design. It captures the spunkiness of a graphic tee or sweatshirt, but you create it with your hook and yarn. The chunky embroidery accents are artful, and I love how this design empowers crocheters to take the reins and make it their own. Every time I see this pattern, I imagine all the ways others can change the color palette, add more crafty elements, and truly make it unique.” – Nicola, Editor

Wild Rose Crochet Pillow by Susan Kennedy
“I’ve always been drawn to Roses and this pillow captures the beauty of my favorite flower with ease. Being named after my grandmother (Rose Josephine), I’ve made it a point to always have Roses in the garden because they remind me of her. This pillow makes it easy to feature more permanent versions of this delicate flower. Play with various pinks, yellows and creams to create your own Rose pillow that looks great on your wicker furniture in the four season room.” – Caitlin

Serena Granny Square Duster Cardigan by Tiam Safari
“One of the most exciting trends of the last decade has been the resurgence of the granny square in modern fashion. While crocheters will argue it never left our hooks, it’s been fun to see a wider acceptance of the “granny” crochet style. It’s now embraced in boho designs and vibrant color pairings instead of always being paired with black borders. As an editor, I particularly love our spring and summer issues. Even though “crochet season” is typically the opposite, my goal has always been to make crochet a year-round activity. Tiam chose some amazing colors for this cardigan, making it summery, classic, and modern all at once.” – Nicola, Editor

Midnight Garden Afghan by Olya Mikesh
“I just can’t get enough of this afghan. It’s colorful, floral, and oh-so fun! When it first arrived in our offices I remember how badly I wanted to keep it! I could picture it bringing the freshness of spring into our living room. It’s truly the perfect blend of modern and retro and looks great in a variety of color palettes.” – Caitlin, Editor

Shelly’s Beachcomber Crochet Bag by Debra Arch
“I’ve always loved searching for shells and treasured beach glass along the shores of Lake Michigan, Siesta Key and Captiva, Florida, and anywhere the water meets the shore. Collaborating with Debra on this design (and her matching knitting pattern featured in I Like Knitting!) was an absolute joy. This whimsical design has captivated me from the start and always makes me long for the beach. I’ve realized that beaches are some of my favorite places, full of nostalgia, family time, and the thrill of finding an intact seashell or a rare piece of glass. Every time we feature this bag, it brings a smile to my face.” – Nicola, Editor

Confetti the Unicorn by Murray Stewart
“It must be a rite of passage for every little girl to love unicorns. My two-year-old’s favorite book is Unicorn Night, Sleep Tight. Her bath towel is pink and unicorn speckled. She has a unicorn toy and loves rainbow sprinkles. Me loving this pattern was as natural as can be! It’s easy to make for amigurumi, as cute as a button and perfect for kids and adults alike.” – Caitlin, Editor

Adoring Florals Scarf by Carmen Heffernan
“I’ve always loved this design, and Carmen is known for her gorgeous color choices. I remember being so obsessed with this scarf when it came in that I even took it with me to Arizona for some fun photos in the desert! Designs like this scarf elevate crochet beyond the realm of basic or outdated styles. When we published this design, I felt like I was really coming into my own as an editor. I was trying to find designers and crochet styles that would propel our magazine forward while honoring time-tested techniques. Floral crochet has been popular for decades, and from the past decade, this is my top floral pick.” – Nicola, Editor

Nostalgic Crochet Light Up Christmas Tree by Debra Arch
“To say I was thrilled with how this project turned out is an understatement. Nicola and I had a vision to create a crochet version of a vintage, ceramic Christmas tree and Debra’s design captured the timeless magic we envisioned. Growing up, the ceramic tree was the first thing my mom and grandma would put up for the holidays. Every time I see it, I’m filled with fond memories of holidays past. Tap into that same magic with this one-of-a-kind pattern.” – Caitlin, Editor

Sandstone Shawl by Heather Gibbs
“I had a vision for this design, and Heather rose to the challenge, exceeding my expectations. In my quest to make summer crochet more prominent and popular, I imagined a Stevie Nicks, boho moment with this shawl in a field of tall grasses. During the photoshoot, I remember not wanting to move on to the next piece because this shawl was so magical to photograph. The texture of the yarn and the combination of stitches truly came together to create this boho dream shawl.” – Nicola, Editor

Ainsley Top by Nazanin Fard
“Ever since I was little, I’ve always loved the outdoors — the woods, meadows, my parent’s tree nursery. Inspired by the beauty and openness of nature, this gorgeous top was destined to make it to my top five patterns. Perfect for layering, this project is ideal for hot summer days spent lounging outdoors.” – Caitlin, Editor
