Birch the Deer

Birch is a curious little deer who enjoy cuddles by the fireplace and listening for loons by the lake. Birch is quite fond of his baby antlers and hopes to grow up to be a big strong buck one day.

Gauge: 4 sts = 1” [2.5 cm] in sc

Materials

Light weight yarnYarn: Deramores Studio DK (100% Acrylic; 273 yards [250 meters]/100 grams): 70020 Oatmeal (A, 1 ball), 70024 Chocolate (B, 1 ball), 70002 Pearl (C, 1 ball)

Hook: US size C/2 (3 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle, stitch marker, two 12mm black safety eyes, black sewing thread, toy filler

All parts are worked in continuous rounds without joining. Place the stitch marker in the top of the first st to mark start of round.

Body

Rnd 1: With A, make a magic ring (adjustable ring), work 6 sc into the ring. (6 sts)

Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in each st around. (12 sts)

Rnd 3: *Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around. (18 sts)

Rnd 4: *Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around. (24 sts)

Rnd 5: *Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around. (30 sts)

Rnd 6: *Sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around. (36 sts)

Rnd 7: *Sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around. (42 sts)

Rnd 8: *Sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around. (48 sts)

Rnds 20-21: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 22: *Sc in next 6 sts, sc2tog in next st; rep from * around. (42 sts)

Rnds 23-24: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 25: *Sc in next 5 sts, sc2tog in next st; rep from * around. (36 sts)

Rnds 26-27: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 28: *Sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog in next st; rep from * around. (30 sts)

Rnds 29-30: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 31: *Sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog in next st; rep from * around, sl st to the next st to join. (24 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail.

With C, embroider on some spots on the back of your Deer on Rnds 10-16, roughly 6-7 spots a couple of sts apart on each rnd.

Stuff body.

Eye Patches (make 2)

Rnds 1-4: With C, make same as Body, but leaving the centre ring loose enough to push the eye stalk of your safety eye through. On the last rnd, fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail.

Head

Rnds 1-5: With C, make same as Body. (30 sts)

Rnds 6-9: Sc in each st around.

Fasten off C.

Rnd 10: With A, sc in each st around.

Rnd 11: *Sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around. (42 sts)

Rnd 12: *Sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around. (48 sts)

Rnds 13-14: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 15: *Sc in next 7 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around. (54 sts)

Rnds 16-25: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 26: *Sc in next 7 sts, sc2tog in next st; rep from * around (48 sts)

Rnd 27: *Sc in next 6 sts, sc2tog in next st; rep from * around (42 sts)

Sew Eye Patches to Head on Rnds 15-16 at least 7 sts apart pushing the safety eyes through the Eye Patches and Head.

Using black thread, embroider on some eyelashes.

With B, embroider on a nose on Rnds 3-6.

With C, embroider on some spots on the top of Head of Deer on Rnds 19-24, starting with 3 spots, then 4 going up to 6 spots a couple of sts apart on each rnd.

Begin to stuff, continuing to stuff as you go.

Rnd 28: *Sc in next 5 sts, sc2tog in next st; rep from * around. (36 sts)

Rnd 29: *Sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog in next st; rep from * around. (30 sts)

Rnd 30: *Sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog in next st; rep from * around. (24 sts)

Rnd 31: *Sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog in next st; rep from * around. (18 sts)

Rnd 32: *Sc in next st, sc2tog in next st; rep from * around. (12 sts)

Rnd 33: *Sc2tog; rep from * around; (6 sts)

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Ears (make 2)

Rnd 1: With A, make a magic ring (adjustable ring), work 6 sc into the ring. (6 sts)

Rnd 2: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 3: *Sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around. (8 sts)

Rnd 4: *Sc in next 3 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around. (10 sts)

Rnd 5: *Sc in next 4 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around. (12 sts)

Rnd 6: *Sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around. (14 sts)

Rnd 7: *Sc in next 6 sts, 2 sc in next st; rep from * around. (16 sts)

Horns (make 2)

Rnd 1: With C, make a magic ring (adjustable ring), work 8 sc into the ring. (8 sts)

Rnds 2-15: Sc in each st around.

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail.

Horn Tips (make 2)

Rnds 1-5: Make same as Horns.

Stuff both parts of Horns, then attach Horn Tips to Horns on Rnds 6-8.

Forelegs (make 2):

Rnds 1-5: With B, make same as Body. (30 sts)

Rnds 6-8: Sc in each st around.

Rnd 9: *Sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog in next st; rep from * around. (24 sts)

Rnd 10: *Sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog in next st; rep from * around. (18 sts)

Rnd 11: Sc in each st around.

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Rnds 12-23: With A, sc in each st around.

Rnd 24: *Sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog in next st; rep from * around. (15 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Stuff legs up to Rnd 17 only.

Hind Legs (make 2)

Rnds 1-22: Make same as Forelegs.

Rnd 23: *Sc in next 4 sts, sc2tog in next st; rep from * around. (15 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail. Stuff legs up to Rnd 17 only.

Tail

Rnds 1-4: With A, make same as Body. (24 sts)

Rnds 5-8: Sc in each st around

Rnd 9: *Sc in next 2 sts, sc2tog in next st; rep from * around. (18 sts)

Rnd 10: *Sc in next st, sc2tog in next st; rep from * around. (12 sts)

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail.

Finishing

Ears

Attach Ears to either side of Head on Rnd 24 approximately 12 sts apart.

Horns

Attach Horns in between Ears.

Join Head to Body

Attach Head on the open top of Body over Rnds 16-24 of Head.

Front Legs

Sew the side edges together then attach to Rnd 27 approximately 1 st apart.

Using C, embroider a line on the front of each hoof.

Note that the Body leans forward slightly to rest on the front hooves.

Hind Legs

Sew the side edges together then attach over Rnds 9-15 approximately 20 sts apart.

Using C, embroider a line on the front of each hoof.

Tail

Attach Tail onto the back of Body.

Weave in any rem ends.
