Linen Stitch Pattern (multiple of 2 sts):

Foundation Row: Ch 2 (counts as st throughout), sk first sc, *sc in next sc, ch 1, sk next sc; rep from * to last sc, ch 1, sk last sc, sc in turning ch, turn.

Row 1: Ch 2, sk first sc, *sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, sk next sc; rep from * to last sc, ch 1, sk last sc, sc in ch-2 sp, turn.

Pattern Notes

The coat is worked in pieces, starting with the patch pockets, which also serve as a gauge swatch. Simple 2-stitch repeat of the Linen Stitch pattern is completely reversible, and easy to follow for incorporating any shaping necessary for the pattern. The pieces are sewn together with fingering weight yarn or embroidery floss to reduce bulk in the seams using a backstitch. Finally, a surface crochet chain in contrasting color is used to attach the pockets as well as to add a decorative faux piping.

Finishing

Assembling

All assembly is done from the wrong side, holding the pieces RS together. Using a fingering weight yarn or an embroidery floss in matching color, sew the shoulder seams using a backstitch. Lining up the middle of the Sleeve Cap with the Shoulder seam, sew the sleeves into the arm openings using the backstitch. Starting at the underarm, sew the sleeve seams down to the cuff. Staring at the underarms, sew the side seams, stopping 8” from the edge.

Collar

With RS facing, join yarn at the Right Front neck edge.

Row 1 (RS): Ch1, sc in each st around the neck opening, making sure to end with an even number of sts, turn.

Row 2 (WS): Ch 2, sk first sc, *sc in next sc, ch 1, sk next sc; rep from * to last sc, ch 1, sk last sc, sc in turning ch, turn.

Row 3 (inc): Ch 2, (sc, ch 1) 2 twice in next ch-1 sp, *sk next sc, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1; rep from * to last ch-1 sp, (sc, ch 1) twice in last ch-1 sp, sc in ch-2 sp, turn. (4 sts increased)

Row 4: Work in pattern as established.

Rep Rows 3-4 once more.

Work even in pattern for a total of 7 rows.

Fasten off.

Button Band

With RS facing, attach yarn at the top corner of Left Front edge. Begin working in pattern down the Left Front edge. Work a total of 5 rows. Fasten off.

Buttonhole Band

With WS facing, attach yarn at the top corner of Right Front edge. Begin working in pattern down the Right Front edge. Work a total of 2 rows.

Next Row (buttonholes): Ch 2, sc in first ch-1 sp, *ch 2, sk next ch-1 sp, sc in next ch-1 sp (one buttonhole made), work in pattern for 4.25 (4.25, 4.5, 4.5) (4.75, 4.75, 5, 5)”; rep from* another 5 times, work in pattern to end. (6 buttonholes made)

Work 2 rows in pattern.

Fasten off.

Pin pockets to the Front panels, centering them 4” from the bottom hem. With CC, using a surface crochet chain technique, attach the pockets to the Fronts, working around the 3 sides of the pockets. Using the same technique, outline the edge of the collar, edges of the Front panels, and sleeve cuffs, working ¾” away from the edge of the sleeve. Weave in ends. Sew buttons to the Buttonband, opposite the buttonholes.
