Coronado Cardigan

Wrap shades of plum around your shoulders as you wear your favorite white dress. Airy and majestic, this is the perfect summer cardigan.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: XS (S, M, L/XL/2X, 2X/3X)
Finished Bust: 29½ (34½, 40, 45½, 50½, 56)”
Finished Length: 15 (15, 16, 17, 18¼, 18¼)”

Gauge: 3 reps and 7 rows = 4″ (10cm) in Shell Lace pat after blocking

Materials

Yarn: Classic Jojoland Rhythm (100% washable wool; 110 yards [100 meters]/50 grams): #M13 Bumble Berry (5 (6, 7, 9, 10, 11) balls)
Hook: US size H/8 (5.00 mm) hook or size to obtain correct gauge
Notions: 1 button, â…ž” in diameter, yarn needle

Pattern Notes

Cardi is worked in 5 pieces – back, 2 fronts and 2 sleeves – from the top down, then sewn together. Button closure at neck buttons into the already open and lacy fabric.

Special Stitches

Shell Lace Pattern (multiple of 5 ch + 3 for foundation)
Row 1 (RS): Sk 3 ch (counts as 1 dc), dc in next ch, * ch 2, sk 2 foundation ch, dc in each of next 3 ch; rep from * to last 4 ch, ch 2, sk 2 foundation ch, dc in each of last 2 ch.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in 1st dc, * sk next dc, 5 dc in next ch-2 sp, sk next dc, sc in next dc; rep from * to end.
Row 3: Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and 1 ch), sk next dc, * dc in each of next 3 dc, ch 2, sk 2 dc; rep from * to last 5 dc, dc in each of next 3 dc, ch 1, dc in last sc.
Row 4: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), 2 dc in 1st dc, sk next dc, sc in next dc, * sk next dc, 5 dc in next ch-2 sp, sk next dc, sc in next dc; rep from * to end, 3 dc in last sp.
Row 5: Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), dc in next dc, ch 2, sk 2 dc, * dc in each of next 3 dc, ch 2, sk 2 dc; rep from * to last 2 sts, dc in each of last 2 sts.
Rep rows 2-5 only for Shell Lace pat.

Pattern

Back

Ch 43 (53, 53, 63, 63, 73), and work 13 (13, 15, 15, 17, 17) rows in Shell Lace pat.

Increase for Underarm

Remove hook from loop, and loosen loop to keep it from unraveling.
Join yarn with a sl st to other end of last row, ch 9 (9, 14, 14, 21, 21), and fasten off.
Place hook back into open loop, and pull loop back down to size.

For Sizes XS, S, 2X, and 3X Only
Next Row (WS): Ch 11 (11, x, x, 23, 23), 2 dc in 3rd ch from hook, * sk 2 ch, sc in next ch, sk 2 ch, 5 dc in next ch; rep from * to 1st dc, sc in 1st dc, work in established pat to joining sl st, sc in same st as sl st, ** sk 2 ch, 5 dc in next ch, sk 2 ch, sc in next ch; rep from * * to last 3 ch, 3 dc in last ch.

For Sizes M and L/XL Only
Next Row (WS): Ch x (x, 15, 15, x, x), sc in 2nd ch from hook, * sk 2 ch, 5 dc in next ch, sk 2 ch, sc in next ch; rep from * to 1st dc, 5 dc in 1st dc, work in established pat to joining sl st, 5 dc in same st as joining sl st, sk next ch, sc in next ch, rep from * to * to end.

For All Sizes
Work in established pat until piece measures 7½ (7½, 7½, 8½, 8½, 8½)” from underarm, ending after a pat row 2 or 4.
Fasten off.

Left Front

Ch 8 (13, 13, 18, 18, 23), and work 6 rows in Shell Lace pat.

Increase for Neck

Row 7 (RS): Ch 3, dc in 1st sc, ch 2, work in established pat to end.
Row 8: Work in established pat to last sp, 5 dc in last sp, sc in last st.
Row 9: Ch 15, sk 3 ch (counts as 1 dc), dc in next ch, [ch 2, sk 2 ch, dc in each of next 3 ch] twice, ch 2, work in established pat to end.
Work in established Shell Lace pat for 4 (4, 6, 6, 8, 8) more rows.
Increase for underarm at left side edge same as back, then work evenly until piece measures same as back from underarm, ending after a pat row 2 or 4.
Fasten off.

Right Front

Ch 8 (13, 13, 18, 18, 23), and work 6 rows in Shell Lace pat.

Increase for Neck

Row 7 (RS): Work in established pat to last 4 dc, dc in each of next 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in last sc.
Row 8: Ch 1, sc in 1st dc, 5 dc in 1st sp, work in established pat to end.
Remove hook from loop, and loosen loop to keep it from unraveling.
Join yarn with a sl st to other end of last row, ch 13, and fasten off.
Place hook back into open loop, and pull loop back down to size.
Row 9: Work in established pat to last 4 dc, dc in each of next 3 dc, ch 2, sk next dc and next ch, [dc in each of next 3 ch, ch 2, sk 2 ch] twice, dc in each of last 2 ch.
Work in established Shell Lace pat for 4 (4, 6, 6, 8, 8) more rows.
Increase for underarm at right side edge same as back, then work evenly until piece measures same as back from underarm, ending after a pat row 2 or 4.
Fasten off.

Sleeves

Ch 58 (58, 68, 68, 78, 78) and work in Shell Lace pat until piece measures 10 (10, 11, 11, 12, 12)”, ending after a pat row 2 or 4.
Fasten off.
Make other sleeve the same.

Finishing

Block pieces to measurements.
Sew shoulder seams, sew sleeves to body, then sew side and sleeve seams.

Body Edging

With RS facing, join yarn with a sl st at shoulder seam, and work 1 rnd evenly in sc around entire edge. Sl st in 1st sc to connect. Fasten off.
Sew button to left front piece at neck edge corner. Button directly into fabric on opposite side.
Weave in all loose ends.
