How to Single Crochet

Single Crochet Wristers

When you are first learning how to crochet, the single crochet stitch is the first “complete” stitch you will often be taught after mastering how to chain.

The single crochet stitch is the most basic stitch you’ll have in your crochet stitch repertoire, and you’ll find yourself using it in many places. You can make anything from a sweet crochet baby blanket to cozy-warm crochet sweater with the versatile crochet stitch.

  1. Insert the hook under both front and back loops of the V.
    single crochet step one
  2. Wrap the yarn over the hook from back to front (yarn over) and draw it through the V.
    single crochet step two
  3. You now have two loops on your hook. Yarn over and pull the yarn through both loops.
    single crochet step three
  4. And there you go, you’ve just made one single crochet stitch!

Now that you’ve mastered the single crochet, check out this super-easy pattern for a pair of fingerless mitts that you can work up in no time at all.
