I know it’s been the ultimate test of patience waiting on the release of the delightful pattern for this chunky, dreamy crochet basket pattern from Janaya Chouinard at Charmed by Ewe. Now that you have all the materials that were listed in our first stage of the September Crochet Along, it’s time to start stitching! This stage is the foundation for your crochet project—we’ll add the finishing touches for handles or a drawstring next time.
Here are a few things to keep in mind before getting started:
- If you’ve never tried the Celtic Weave Stitch, you can easily learn by checking out these photo and video tutorials.
- Be sure to check your gauge for this to turn out well. Use this: HDC Gauge Swatch: 7.5 stitches and 5 rows = 4 inches (10 cm)
- This pattern does not count the starting chain as a stitch.
- Start each round in the same stitch as your starting chain.
- The end of each round is joined by slip stitching in the first stitch of the round, not the starting chain.
- Special stitch: Third Loop. Fold your work towards you so the back of the HDC is visible. The arrows in this image indicate the “third loop” on the back of the stitch. You will be working into the back loop and third loop for Round 11 only.
Abbreviations:
- ch = chain
- sl st = slip stitch
- sc = single crochet
- hdc = half double crochet
- FPhdc = front post half double crochet
- FPtrc = front post treble crochet

What size hook for this
Looks great
Just finished my basket. First time doing the Celtic stitch. I love that it has the proper over and under pattern. Can’t wait to use it as a photo prop. Looking forward to making more. I feel like I finally was getting it right by the last row. Lol. Just started crocheting 4 months ago.
What size hook and yarn did you use in this sample?
