Pattern
Body (make 2)
Ch 36 (42, 48, 52, 58).
Row 1 (RS): Dc in 4th ch from hook (skipped chs count as dc), dc in each ch to end. (33 (39, 45, 49, 55) dc)
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc plus ch 1 here and throughout), skip second stitch, [dc in next st, ch 1, sk next st] to last st, dc in last st. (17 (20, 23, 25, 28) dc, 16 (19, 22, 24, 27) ch-1 sps)
Rows 3-87 (90, 93, 95, 98): Ch 3, sk first ch-sp, [dc in next dc, ch 1, sk next ch-sp] to last st, dc in last st.
Row 88 (91, 94, 96, 99): Ch 3, [dc, dc in next ch-1 sp] to end. (33 (39, 45, 49, 55) dc)
Fasten off.
Borders (make 4)
With RS facing and across the larger edges of each body piece.
Row 1 (RS): Ch 1 (does count as a st here and throughout), work sc evenly spaced, working 2 sc in each dc. (176 (182, 188, 192, 198) sc)
Rows 2-5: Ch 1, sc across.
Fasten off. Work border on both long edges.
Assembling
Fold both pieces right side facing and join approximately ½ the length of both lower sides, back and front with a sl st working through outer loops only.
Finish armholes and neck with a sl st through outer loops around.
Hem
With RS facing
Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1, work sc evenly spaced, working 1 sc in each dc, and 1 sc in each sc from the border, sl st in first st to join, do not turn. (156 (180, 204, 220, 244) sc).
Rnd 2-5: Ch 1, sc across.
Rnd 6: Ch 1, sl st through outer loops around.
Weaving
With yarn held double, make 172 (178, 184, 188, 194) ch strands of each color: 6 (12, 18, 22, 28) MC, and 8 of each CC for all sizes, leaving a 5-6” tail in both edges.
Thread one tail onto a tapestry needle and weave vertically along the ch-1 sps alternating under and over 1 row at a time to create a woven effect, as follows:
[CC1, CC2, CC3] 2 (2, 3, 3, 3) times; MC 3 (6, 3, 5, 8) times; [CC3, CC2, CC1] 2 (2, 3, 3, 3) times.
Finishing
Weave in ends. Wash and block.
If I wanted to make this top about 4 inches longer, how many stitches would I have to add, please?
According to your 4” x 4” gauge, you will need to multiply the number of rows ( not the number of stitches) by 2. In the case of the gauge of the pattern tit will be 11x 2= 22 addtional rows of body pattern.
Kind regards,
Cristina
This is so cute- I’m not usually a fan of cropped tops so I might make it a little longer! Love the idea of varied weights too.
The pattern says to make two bodies, but the front is a v-neck. Is the back also a v?
Yes, the back is also a V-neck. – Nicola, Editor
