Fair & Square Argyle Top

It’s definitely hip to be square — just take a look at this vest. Constructed with two types of granny squares for maximum visual appeal, each argyle is oversized giving this traditional top a new look that’s perfect for the season.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Sizes: M (L, XL) Finished Measurement 36 (39, 42)” / [92 (99, 106) cm] in width x 20.5 (22, 23.5)” / [52 (55.5, 59) cm] in length.

Gauge: 1 Motif **1 (2, 3) = 4.5 (4.75, 5.25)” / [11.5 (12.5, 13.3) cm] in diagonal.

Note: Motif **1 (2, 3) refer to Motif A1 (2, 3), Motif B1 (2, 3), Motif At1 (2, 3), and Motif Bt1 (2, 3).

Materials

Yarn: Knit Picks Palette (100% Peruvian Highland Wool; 231 yards [211 meters] /50 grams):  24580 Delta Palette (MC 5 (6, 7) balls), 24565 Fairy Tale Palette (A 1 (1, 1) ball), 23733 Mist Palette (B 1 (1, 1) ball), Color 24249 Sweet Potato Palette (C 1 (1, 1) ball)

Hook: US size C/3 (2.5 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle, locking stitch marker or safety pin.

Pattern Notes

  1. All Solid and Granny squares arrangement is shown in Figure 1.
  2. The Solid squares are used in the front of vest and are joined with different colors of yarn to form the argyle lines. The colors of yarn used to join the Solid squares are shown in Figure 2.

Assembly

With RS facing down, arrange all Solid and Granny squares as indicated in Figure 1 and align them so that the edges to be joined are touching each other. Join all squares with Single Crochet Join Method. Work from the back of the squares and single crochet the inner loops of the square. Join the Solid squares with the colors indicated in Figure 2 and the rest of squares with the MC color.

Waistband

Rnd 1: With MC, 230 (256, 280) sc around the bottom of Vest, sl st in first sc to join.

Rnd 2: Ch 1 (counts as a sc), sc in first sc, *ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc; rep from * around to before last sc, ch 1, sl st in first sc to join.

Rnd 3: Ch 2 (counts as a ch-1 sp), sc in next ch-1 sp, *ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp: rep from * around to last ch-1 sp, sl st in first ch-1 sp to join.

Rnd 4: Rep Rnd 2.

Rnd 5: With A, rep Rnd 3.

Rnd 6: With B, rep Rnd 2.

Rnd 7: With C, rep Rnd 3.

Rnds 8-10: With MC, rep Rnds 2–4.

Rnds 11-13: With A-C, rep Rnds 5-7 with corresponding colors.

Rnds 14-19: With MC, rep Rnd 2-3, 3 times.

Fasten off.

Armhole Edgings (Left and Right)

Rnd 1: With MC, 112 (124, 136) sc around Armhole, sl st in first sc to join.

Rnd 2: Ch 1 (counts as a sc), sc in first sc, *ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc in next sc; rep from * around to before last sc, ch 1, sl st in first sc to join.

Rnd 3: Ch 2 (counts as a ch-1 sp), sc in next ch-1 sp, *ch 1, sc in next ch-1 sp: rep from * around to last ch-1 sp, sl st in first ch-1 sp to join.

Rnd 4: Rep Rnd 2.

Rnd 5: With A, rep Rnd 3.

Rnd 6: With B, rep Rnd 2.

Rnd 7: With C, rep Rnd 3.

Rnds 8: With MC, rep Rnds 2.

Fasten off.

Neckband

Rnd 1: With MC, 168 (186, 204) sc around Neckband, sl st in first sc to join. Place a locking ring marker or safe pin under the center stitch of V shape.

Rnds 2-8: Follow the same pattern as Armhole Edging, except to sk 2 sts at the center of V shape (one st on each side of locking marker) in every rnd to form the V shape.

Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Block.
