Lucky in Love Striped Sweater

With easy stitches and construction, this classic striped sweater is simple and mindless to make. The pocket and sweet heart applique provides a cute detail that is sure to receive compliments.

Materials

Medium weight yarnYarn: Cascade Yarns Pacific (60% acrylic, 40% superwash Merino wool; 213 yards [195 meters]/100 grams): #65 Denim Heather (MC, 3 (4, 4, 5, 5, 6) balls), #02 White (CC1, 2 (2, 3, 3, 4, 4) balls), #43 Ruby (CC2, 1 ball)

Hook: US size I/9 (5.5 mm)

Pattern Notes

The front and back are worked in rows separately and seamed. The sleeves are joined at the armhole and worked from the top down in the round. The pocket and heart are worked separately and sewn onto the sweater.

Pattern

Body (make 2)

Row 1: With MC, foundation hdc 61 (68, 82, 96, 110, 124), turn.
Rows 2–7 (8, 9, 10, 11, 12): Ch 1, hdc across, turn. (61 (68, 82, 96, 110, 124) hdc)

Switch to CC1.
Rows 8 (9, 10, 11, 12, 13)–14 (16, 18, 20, 22, 24): Ch 1, hdc across, turn.

Switch to MC.

Rows 15 (17, 19, 21, 23, 25)–21 (24, 27, 30, 33, 36): Ch 1, hdc across, turn.

Rep Rows 8 (9, 10, 11, 12, 13)-21 (24, 27, 30, 33, 36) two more times for a total of 49 (56, 63, 70, 77, 84) rows.

Fasten off.

Assembly

Block the front and back. Lay the front on top of the back and seam 5.5 (6, 6.5, 7, 7, 7)” for each shoulder. Seam the side seams, leaving 7 (8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13)” open for the armhole.

Sleeves

With RS facing and MC, attach yarn at the side seam at the underarm.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, evenly work 52 (56, 60, 64, 68, 72) hdc around the armhole, sl st into the first st to join. (52 (56, 60, 64, 68, 72) hdc)

Rnds 2–7 (8, 9, 10, 11, 12): Ch 1, hdc around, sl st into the first st to join.

Switch to CC1.

Rnds 8 (9, 10, 11, 12, 13)–14 (16, 18, 20, 22, 24): Ch 1, hdc around, sl st into the first st to join.

Switch to MC.

Rnd 15 (17, 19, 21, 23, 25) (dec): Ch 1, *hdc2tog, hdc in next 24 (26, 28, 30, 32, 34) sts, rep from once more, sl st into the first st to join. (50 (54, 58, 62, 66, 70) sts remain)

Rnds 16 (18, 20, 22, 24, 26)–21 (24, 27, 30, 33, 36): Ch 1, hdc around, sl st into the first st to join.

Switch to CC1.

Rnd 22 (25, 28, 31, 34, 37) (dec): Ch 1, *hdc2tog, hdc in next 23 (25, 27, 29, 31, 33) sts, rep from * once more, sl st into the first st to join. (48 (52, 56, 60, 64, 68) sts remain)

Rnds 23 (26, 29, 32, 35, 38)–28 (32, 36, 40, 44, 48): Ch 1, hdc around, sl st into the first st to join.

Switch to MC.

Rnd 29 (33, 37, 41, 45, 49) (dec): Ch 1, *hdc2tog, hdc in next 22 (24, 26, 28, 30, 32) sts, rep from * once more, sl st into the first st to join. (46 (50, 54, 58, 62, 66) sts remain).

Rnds 30 (34, 38, 42, 46, 50)–31 (36, 40, 45, 50, 54): Ch 1, hdc around, sl st into the first st to join.

Rnd 32 (37, 41, 46, 51, 55) (dec): Ch 1, *hdc2tog, hdc in next 21 (23, 25, 27, 29, 31) sts, rep from * once more, sl st into the first st to join. (44 (48, 52, 56, 64, 68) sts remain)

Rnds 33 (38, 42, 47, 52, 56)–35 (40, 45, 51, 56, 61): Ch 1, hdc around, sl st into the first st to join.

Rnds 36 (41, 46, 52, 57, 62)–37 (42, 47, 54, 59, 64): Ch 1, sc around, sl st into the first st to join.

Fasten off.

Rep for the second sleeve.

Pocket

With MC, ch 13 (13, 13, 15, 15, 15).

Row 1: Hdc in 2nd ch from hook, hdc in every remaining ch across, turn. (12 (12, 12, 14, 14, 14) hdc)

Rows 2–3 (3, 3, 4, 4, 4): Ch 1, hdc across, turn.

Switch to CC1.

Rows 4 (4, 4, 5, 5, 5)–6 (6, 6, 8, 8, 8): Ch 1, hdc across, turn.

Switch to MC.

Rows 7 (7, 7, 9, 9, 9)–9 (9, 9, 12, 12, 12): Ch 1, hdc across, turn.

Fasten off.

Heart

With CC2, make a magic ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 2, 9 dc in the magic ring, sl st into the first st to join. (9 dc)

Rnd 2: Ch 2, 4 dc in first st, hdc in next 3 sts, [dc, ch 1, dc] in next st, hdc in next 3 sts, 4 dc in last st, sl st into first st to join.

Fasten off.

Finishing

Neckline:

With RS facing, attach MC at the neckline.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, evenly hdc around the neckline, sl st into the first st to join.

Fasten off.

Block the heart and pocket. Sew the heart applique to the pocket. Sew the pocket to the front top right of the sweater. Weave in all ends.

    Love the look of this. Can the sleeves also be done flat and then sewn on as still not confident about getting a straight seam, rather than one that spirals round my arm. Also could rib be used at the end of each arm and at the bottom of the jumper. It is just a personal preference but I do like ribbed cuffs to finish a garment.
