Pattern Notes
Each motif is worked from the center out. The motifs are joined as the work progresses. Instructions for joining is included in 2nd and all other motifs instruction. The half motifs finish the top row. Motifs are joined at the corners. Follow the diagram for joining the motifs. The diagram shows the motifs as hexagons which basically they are. A presentation of the motifs is available on the diagram. Cross out the ones you have joined to avoid any confusion.
Special Stitches
Ch-3 Picot: Ch 3, sl st into the first ch just made.
Ch-7 Picot: Ch 7, sl st into the first ch just made.
Fringe:
Cut 3 strands of 8″ (20 cm) long of yarn. With right side of the shawl facing you, insert hook from back to front into the joint of ch-7 sps, fold the strands in half. Catch the center of the fold with the hook and pull through creating a lp. Pass ends through the lp. Pull tightly. Trim the edge of fringe to make them all even.

Motif 1
Ch 6. Make a ring with a sl st into the first ch.
Rnd 1: Ch 4, (dc, ch 1) 11 times, sl st into the 3rd ch. (12 dc)
Rnd 2: Sc into the next ch-1 sp, (ch 7, sc into next ch-1 sp, ch 5, sc into next ch-1 sp) 5 times, ch 7, sc into the next ch-1 sp, ch 2, dc into first sc (with ch 2 this counts as last ch-5 sp). (6 ch-7 sps, 6 ch-5 sps, 12 sc)
Rnd 3: Ch 2, * (2 dc, ch-3 picot, tr, ch-7 picot, tr, dc, ch-3 picot, dc) in next ch-7 sp, ch 2, sc in next ch-5 sp; rep from * around. Fasten off.
Second and all other motifs
Work same as motif 1 until end of rnd 2.
Rnd 3: Ch 2, * (2 dc, ch-3 picot, tr, ch 3, sl st into the corresponding ch-7 sp of previous motif, ch 3, sl st into the top of the tr just worked, tr, dc, ch-3 picot, dc) in next ch-7 sp, ch 2, sc in next ch-5 sp; rep from * as long as necessary, otherwise work as rnd 3 of first motif. Fasten off.
Half motif
Ch 6. Make a ring with a sl st into the first ch.
Rnd 1: Ch 4, (dc, ch 1) 6 times in the ring, dc in ring, turn.
Rnd 2: Ch 9, [sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 5, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 7] twice, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 5, sc in next ch-1 sp, ch 4, dc in last ch-1 sp, turn. (6 sc, 3 ch-5 sps, 2 ch-7 sps)

Weave in all ends. Block shawl to size. Make fringe for the two sides.
