Rosalyn Woven Cowl

Rosalyn is an easy and stylish cowl that’s worked up in luxury yarn. Paired with fancy buttons, this cowl is wonderful for a quick gift for yourself or a closest friend.

Time: Day Project

Skill Lever: Easy

Size: 3 x 33” after blocking

Gauge: 18 sts per 4 in. Gauge is not critical.

Materials

Light weight yarnYarn: Treasure Goddess Yarn (70% baby alpaca, 20% silk, 10% cashmere; 256 yards [225 meters], 3.5 ounces [100 grams]): Song of the Sirens (MC, 1 skein), Poseidon’s Trident (CC, 1 skein); DK weight, size 3

 

Hook: US size G/6 (4.0 mm) & H/8 (5.0 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle, 5  7/8” shank buttons (shown are handmade glass buttons from jodiemcdougallstudios.com), 5  1” safety pins or matching thread

Pattern Notes

Ch 2 at beginning of row 3 counts as a dc. This pattern is worked in 3 strips which are then seamed together.

Strips 1 & 3

With MC and larger hook, ch 136.

Row 1: With smaller hook, sc in back bump of 2nd and each ch across, turn. (135 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 2 (see note), 5 dc, [ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next st] 17 times, 55 sc, [ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next st] 17 times, 6 dc, turn.

Rows 4 & 5: Repeat row 2. Fasten off.

Strip 2

With CC and larger hook, ch 136.

Row 1: With smaller hook, sc in back bump of 2nd and each ch across, turn. (135 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.

Row 3: Ch 2, 5 dc, [ch 1, skip 1 st, dc in next st] across to last 7 sts, ch 1, skip 1 st, 6 dc, turn.

Rows 4 & 5: Repeat row 2. Fasten off.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Block. Seam strips along central 15” (approx. 41st through 96th st) with MC on the outsides and CC on the inside. Mark one side. Fold cowl in half and lay the unattached strips parallel to each other with marked side up. Weave strip 4 under strip 3, over strip 2 and under strip 1. Weave strip 5 over 3, under 2 and over 1. Weave strip 6 under 3, over 2 and under 1.

Attach buttons through both layers at 5 lowest crossing points with safety pins or thread; OR attach buttons to bottom layer and push buttons through ch-1 spaces to top.
