True North Passport Holder

Never worry about misplacing your passport again. This little bag is big enough to hold your ticket to freedom (your passport) plus credit cards, cash and another small trinket or two. Keep everything extra secure with the hidden inner pouch that’s built into this clever design.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 7.5” width x 4.5” height (after assembly)

Gauge: 16 sts and 16 rows = 4” [10 cm] in Linen Stitch patt after wet blocking

Materials

Medium weight yarnYarn: Universal Yarn Deluxe Worsted Superwash (100% Superwash Wool; 220 yards [200 meters]/100 grams): 730 Steel Cut Oats (MC, 1 ball), 743 Bashful Pink (CC1, 1 ball), 740 Twilight (CC2, 1 ball)

Hook: US size G/6 (4 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle, sewing needle, thread to match MC, one 5/8” button.

Special Stitches

Picot: Ch 3, sl st in first ch.

Linen Stitch (worked over an odd number of sts)

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first sc, [ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st] to end, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first sc, [sc in next st, ch 1, sk next st] to last 2 sts, sc in last 2 sts, turn.

Rep Rows 2-3 for patt.

Pattern Notes

The bag body of this pouch is worked flat from the bottom up, then folded and seamed into a small envelope-shaped piece.

Increase Sides

With MC, ch 16.

Set-up Row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (15 sc)

Row 1: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, [ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st] to last 2 sts, ch 1, sk next st, 2 sc in last st, turn. (2 sts inc’d, 17 sts)

Rep Row 1, 20 more times. (57 sts)

Decrease Section

Row 1: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next st, [ch 1, sk next st, sc in next st] to last 2 sts, sc2tog, turn. (2 sts dec’d, 55 sts)

Rep Row 1, 25 more times. (5 sts)

Next Row: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next st, sc2tog, turn. (2 sts dec’d, 3 sts)

Next Row: Ch 1, sc3tog. Fasten off last st.

Inner Pocket

With MC, ch 32.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. (31 sc)

Work in Linen Stitch patt until piece meas 3.25”.

Next Row: Ch 1, sc in each st and sp across, turn. (31 sc)

Next Row (RS): With CC1, sl st in blo of each st across. Fasten off.

Finishing

Block pieces. Lay out Bag Body with beg-ch edge at the bottom facing you. Fold in the sides 3”. Fold up the lower portion so the increase edges are even with the sides.

Seam sides and lower increase portion together.

Edging

Rnd 1: Beg at beg-ch edge, sc in each st to seam, working 1 sc in each row to tip/top of decrease section, ch 5 for button loop, 1 sc in each row to beg, join with sl st to beg sc.

Rnd 2: Sl st in blo of each st across. Fasten off.

Sew Pocket to inside of Bag.

Strap

With MC, ch 200.

Row 1: Working through bottom bumps of chs, hdc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across. Fasten off.

Strap Edging

Rnd 1: With CC1, working along top edge of Strap, sl st in blo of each hdc to end, 3 sl st along side, sl st in blo of each ch to end, 3 sl st along side. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Sew ends of Strap to sides of assembled bag.

Compass Applique

With CC2, beg with adjustable ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, 12 hdc in ring, join with sl st to beg hdc. (12 hdc)

Rnd 2: *Ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, hdc in next 2 chs, dc in next ch, sk next hdc from Rnd 1, sl st in next hdc from Rnd 1, ch 6, sl st in 2nd ch from hook and next 4 chs, sl st in next hdc from Rnd 1; rep from * 3 more times. Fasten off.

Rnd 3: Beg with standing st in first skipped ch from Rnd 2, *sc in skipped ch along wide point, ch 6, sc in skipped ch along skinny point, ch 6; rep from * 3 more times, join with sl st to beg sc.

Rnd 4: Ch 1, *8 sc in ch-6 sp, sk next sc, 8 sc in ch-6 sp, picot; rep from * 3 more times.

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

With sewing needle and thread, invisibly sew final round of Applique to back of Bag Body.

With CC2 held double, embroider a capital letter N just to the right of the Compass Applique, using photo as a guide.

Sew button beneath button loop.

Weave in ends.
