Yorkshire Throw

The main body of this moody throw is worked back and forth with crossed double crochet and green yarn. Thick enough to provide significant warmth, but still elegant with a gorgeous, lacy border, this must-have pattern is just what you need this season.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: 47” x 63″

Gauge: 16 dc and 9 rows = 4” [10 cm]

Materials

Yarn: Cascade Yarns Cascade 220 Heathers (100% Wool; 220 yards [201 meters]/100 grams): 9459 Yakima Heather (MC, 11 balls); 9600 Antiqued Heather (CC, 3 balls)

Hook: US size 7 (4.5 mm)

Notions: Tapestry needle; removeable stitch marker (optional)

Abbreviations

CC – contrast color

MC – main color

Sk – skip

Special Stitches

1/2dc cross: Sk 1 dc (or ch), dc in next 2 dc (or ch), dc in skipped dc (or ch)

Edge Shell: [(Dc, picot) 5 times, dc] all in the same st

P (picot): Ch 3, insert hook into back bar of first ch, yo, pull through all lps on hook

Shell: (2 dc, ch 1) twice, 2dc in same st

Tall V-Stitch: (Tr, ch 1, tr) in same st

V-Stitch: (Dc, ch 3, dc) in same st

Pattern Notes

It may be helpful to place a removable marker in the corner stitches of each rnd of border.

For the first rnd of border you will need to work 2 sc in a dc about 1/3 and 2/3 the way across top and bottom of blanket to get the required number of sc.

For Rnd 6 of border, one side of the corner sc has 5 sc in the 5 ch-sp and the other side has 4 sc in the 5 ch-sp.

Pattern

With MC, ch 169.

Row 1: Starting in 4th ch from hook, work 55 1/2dc cross row, ending with dc in last ch, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3, sk first dc, work 55 1/2dc cross row, ending with dc in tch, turn. Updated 12/9/2024

Rep Row 2 until Blanket meas 53” from starting ch.

Border

Rnd 1: With MC and working across top of Blanket, ch 1, 3 sc in dc (corner), 165 sc to tch, 3 sc in tch (corner), 237 sc to starting ch, 3 sc in starting ch (corner), 165 sc to last starting ch, 3 sc in last starting ch (corner), 237 sc to beg of rnd, sl st to first sc. Do not turn – 167 sc at top and bottom; 239 sc each side.

Rnd 2: Join CC to beg sc, ch 3, *3 dc in next sc (corner), dc in each sc to next corner; rep from * 3 more times ending with sl st in first dc – 169 dc at top and bottom; 241 dc each side.

Rnd 3: With MC, ch 1, *sc in each dc to corner, 3 sc in corner dc; rep from * 3 more times, sc in each dc to beg ch, sl st to first sc – 171 sc at top and bottom; 243 sc each side.

Rnd 4: With MC, sl st in next 3 sc, ch 6, dc in same sc (corner), sk 1 sc, V-Stitch, (sk 3 sc, V-Stitch) 42 times, sk 1 sc, V-Stitch (corner), sk 1 sc, V-stitch, (sk 3 sc, V-stitch) 60 times, sk 1 sc, V-stitch (corner), sk 1 sc, V-Stitch, (sk 3 sc, V-stitch) 42 times, sk 1 sc, V-stitch (corner), sk 1 sc, V-stitch, (sk 3 sc, V-stitch) 60 times, ending with sl st in 3rd ch of tch – 43 V-Stitches at top and bottom; 61 V-Stitches each side.

Rnd 5: With MC, sl st to middle of ch-sp, ch 1, sc in ch-sp (corner), (ch 5, sc in next ch-sp, *ch 4, sc in next ch-sp; rep from * to V-Stitch before corner, ch 5, sc in corner ch-sp) 4 times, ending with sl st in the corner sc – 44 ch-sp across top and bottom; 62 ch-sp along each side.

Rnd 6: With MC, ch 1, *3 sc in corner sc, 5 sc in 5 ch-sp, 4 sc in each 4 ch-sp to corner, 4 sc in 5 ch-sp; rep from * 3 more times, ending with sl st in the first sc – 179 sc across at top and bottom; 251 sc along each side.

Rnd 7: Join CC to corner sc, ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in each sc around, ending with sl st in the top of ch-3 – 179 dc across at top and bottom; 251 dc along each side.

Rnd 8: Join MC to corner dc, ch 1, *sc in corner dc, ch 3, sk 1 dc, sc in next dc, (ch 3, sk 3 dc, sc in next dc) 44 times, ch 3, sk 1 dc, sc in corner dc, ch 3, sk 1 dc, sc in next dc, (ch 3, sk 3 dc, sc in next dc) 62 times, ch 3, sk 1 dc; rep from * once more, ending with sl st to corner sc – 46 ch-sp at top and bottom; 64 ch-sp each side.

Fasten off MC.

Rnd 9: Using CC for remainder of border, sl st in ch-sp after corner sc, ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in same ch-sp, ch 1, 2 dc in same ch-sp, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-sp) 44 times, (ch 1, 2 dc) twice in next ch-sp, (ch 1, 2 dc) twice in next ch-sp, (ch 1, 3dc in next ch-sp) 62 times, (ch 1, 2 dc) twice in next ch-sp, (ch 1, 2 dc) twice in next ch-sp, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-sp) 44 times, (ch 1, 2 dc) twice in next ch-sp, (ch 1, 2 dc) twice in next ch-sp, (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-sp) 62 times, (ch 1, 2 dc) twice in next ch-sp, ch 1, sl st to top of ch-3 – 47 ch-1 sp at top and bottom; 65 ch-1 sp each side.

Rnd 10: Sl st to corner ch-sp (behind current dc), ch 1, sc in ch-sp (corner), *Shell in next ch-sp, sc in next ch-sp; rep from * around, ending with sl st in corner beg sc – 24 Shells across at top and bottom; 33 Shells along each side.

Rnd 11: Ch 5, tr in same sc, ch 2, *sk 2 dc in Shell, sc in next dc, ch 3, sc in next dc, ch 2, Tall V-Stitch in next sc, ch 2; rep from * to last Shell, sk 2 dc in Shell, sc in next dc, P, sc in next dc, ch 2, sl st to 4th ch of beg ch – 23 Tall V-Stitches at top and bottom; 32 Tall V-stitches each side.

Rnd 12: Sl st to ch-sp in corner Tall V-Stitch, ch 3, Edge Shell, ch 2, *(sc in ch-3 sp, ch 1, Edge Shell, ch 1) 23 times, ch 2, Edge Shell, ch 2, (sc in ch-3 sp, ch 1, Edge Shell, ch 1) 32 times, ch 2, Edge Shell, ch 2; rep from * once more, ending with sl st in beg ch-3.

Fasten off CC.

Finishing

Weave in ends.

  • Is the word “across” in the pattern instructions for Row 2 a mistake? The pattern should continue with the 55 1/2 double crochet cross and not just double crochet across the row….right?
