Sunflower Fields Forever Throw

Flower motifs and classic ripple stitch come together for a seasonal favorite featuring sunflowers and lots of tassels. This throw is worked in pieces and sewn together, making it a great travel project!

Skill Level: Intermediate

Size: 46” wide x 66” tall, not including tassels

Gauge: 12 sts and 6 rows = 4” [10 cm] in double crochet after wet blocking

Medium weight yarnYarn: Universal Yarn Deluxe Worsted Superwash (100% Superwash Wool; 220 yards [200 meters]/100 grams): 731 Burrow (CC1, 3 balls), 761 Cavern (CC2, 3 balls), 706 Marigold (CC3, 2 balls), 704 Nectarine (CC4, 1 ball), 753 Azure Heather (CC5, 5 balls), 739 Turquoise (CC6, 2 balls)

Hook: US size I/9 (5.0 mm)

Notions: Removable marker, tapestry needle

Special Stitches

Ripple (begins with multiple of 10 sts + 1, increases to multiple of 12 sts + 1)

Ch multiple of 10 sts + 2.

Row 1: Dc in 3rd ch from hook and each ch across, turn. (last ch 2 from beg ch counts as dc)

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as tr), dc in next 2 dc, hdc in next 2 dc, sc in next dc, 2 sc in next dc, *hdc in next 2 dc, dc in next 2 dc, ch 1, dc in next 2 dc, hdc in next 2 hdc, sc in next dc, 2 sc in next sc; rep from * to last 4 dc, hdc in next 2 dc, dc in next dc, [dc, tr] in last dc, turn.

Spike sc

Insert the hook from front to back under the top 2 lps of stitch indicated one row below. Draw the yarn through the stitch and up to the current level of work, yo, draw the yarn through the 2 lps on hook.

Pattern Notes

Sunflower squares are worked separately and joined together. The center ripple stitch portion is worked separately and sewn to Sunflower strips. The end ripple stitch sections are worked off of the sides of Sunflower strips.

When changing colors at the end of any row/round, work the last leg of each st in the new color and cut old color. Weave in ends as you go to reduce finishing time later.

Sunflower Strip 1

Sunflower Square 1

With CC1, make adjustable ring.

Note: Rnds 1-3 are worked from the WS and are worked in a spiral. Place a marker in the beg st of each rnd.

Rnd 1 (WS): Ch 1, [sc, tr] 4 times in ring. (8 sts)

Rnd 2 (WS): [Sc, tr] in each st around. (16 sts)

Rnd 3 (WS): [Sc, tr] in each st around, join with sl st to beg tr with CC2, turn. (32 sts)

Rnd 4 (RS): Ch 1, [sc in next tr, spike sc in st below next sc] around, join with sl st to beg sc using CC2. (32 sc)

Rnd 5 (RS): With CC2, ch 2 (counts as dc), dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next sts, [dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next sts] around, join with sl st to top of beg ch-2. Fasten off CC2. Fasten off CC2. (8 sts inc’d, 40 dc)

Join CC3 to the back lp of any Rnd 4 st.

Rnd 6: With CC3, sc in blo of same st, sc in blo of next 2 sts, *ch 6, sl st in side of last sc made, sc in blo of next 4 sts; rep from * to last 2 sts, ch 6, sl st in side of last sc made, sk next sc, sc in blo of last st, join with sl st to beg sc. (40 sc, 10 ch-6 loops)

Rnd 7: Sc in same sc, *skip next sc, [5 dc, ch 2, 5 dc (petal)] in ch-6 sp, skip next sc, sc in next sc; rep from * 8 more times, skip next sc, [5 dc, ch 2, 5 dc (petal)] in ch-6 sp, skip next sc, join with sl st to beg sc. (10 sc, 10 petals)

Rnd 8: Spike sc in sc below same sc, working behind petal ch 4, *skip petal, spike sc in sc below next sc, working behind petal ch 4; rep from * 6 more times, ch 2, join with hdc to beg sc with CC4. Break CC3. (10 spike sc, 10 ch-4 sps)

Rnd 9: With CC4, sc in same sp, *[5 dc, ch 2, 5 dc (petal)] in spike sc, sc in ch-4 sp; rep from * 6 more times, 5 dc in spike sc, join with sl st to beg sc. (10 sc, 10 petals)

Rnd 10: Sc in same sc, working behind petal ch 5, *skip petal, sc in next sc, working behind petal, ch 4; rep from * around, join with sl st to beg sc with CC5. Break CC4. (10 sc, 10 ch-5 sps)

Fasten off.

Sunflower Square 2

Work Rnds 1-14 as for Sunflower Square 1, do not fasten off. Hold Square WS tog with Square 1, join along 1 side using sl st.

Sunflower Squares 3-5: Work as for Square 2, joining to previous Square. There is now a Strip of 5 Squares.

Sunflower Strip Edging

With RS facing, attach CC5 to right hand side of long edge of Strip.

Row 1 (RS): Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 130 dc evenly along edge of strip, turn. (acts as Row 1 of Ripple patt)

Row 2: With CC5, work Row 2 of Ripple patt. Patt will be repeated 13 times across row.

Rows 3-4: With CC6, rep Row 3 of Ripple patt.

Rows 5-7: With CC2, rep Row 3 of Ripple patt.

Rows 8-9: With CC1, rep Row 3 of Ripple patt.

Rows 10-12: With CC5, work Row 3 of Ripple patt.

Fasten off.

Sunflower Strip 2

Work as for Strip 1.

Main Afghan

With CC 5, ch 132.

Row 1: Working in bottom bumps of chs, dc in 3rd ch from hook and each ch across, turn (counts as Row 1 of Ripple patt). (131) dc

Row 2: With CC5, work Row 2 of Ripple patt. Patt will be repeated 13 times across row.

Rows 3-4: With CC6, rep Row 3 of Ripple patt.

Rows 5-7: With CC2, rep Row 3 of Ripple patt.

Rows 8-9: With CC1, rep Row 3 of Ripple patt.

Rows 10-12: With CC5, work Row 3 of Ripple patt.

Rows 13-22: Rep Rows 3-12.

Rows 23-24: With CC6, rep Row 3 of Ripple patt.

Rows 25-27: With CC5, rep Row 3 of Ripple patt.

Rows 28-29: With CC1, rep Row 3 of Ripple patt.

Rows 30-32: With CC2, rep Row 3 of Ripple patt.

Rows 33-42: Rep Rows 23-32.

Rows 43-44: With CC6, rep Row 3 of Ripple patt.

Row 45: With CC5, work Row 4 of Ripple patt.

Row 46: With CC5, work Row 5 of Ripple patt.

Fasten off.

Finishing

With RS facing, hold straight edge of a Sunflower Strip to beg-ch edge of Main Afghan. Sl st tog using CC5.

Rep for other Sunflower Strip and final row of Main Afghan.

Weave in rem ends and wet block. Once dry, steam Sunflowers to help relax petals.

Tassels

Wrap yarn around 5” piece of cardboard 50 times.

Cut yarn at one end of cardboard. Cut 2 pieces of yarn, 16” long. Loop one piece around tassel at the top (un-cut) end, securing strands. Carefully slide tassel off cardboard. Wrap the other 8” piece of yarn around Tassel approx. 1” from top end several times. Hide ends of this piece inside Tassel.

Make 8 Tassels each using CC1 and CC5. Make 6 Tassels each using CC2 and CC6. 28 Tassels total.

Attach 14 Tassels to each end of throw at each point of Ripple patt as follows: [CC5, CC1, CC6, CC2] 3 times, CC5, CC1.
