Pink Bliss Afghan

This easy afghan features three shades of yarn to please any pink lover. It’s worked in pieces to make for an easily transportable project. Designed by Salena Baca.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: 40” x 40”

Gauge: 1 square = 9″ (23 cm), excluding border

Materials

Yarn:

Medium Weight Yarn Red Heart Super Saver (100% acrylic; 364 yards [333 meters]/198 grams): #718 Shocking Pink (A, 1 skein), #722 Pretty ‘n Pink (B, 1 skein), #3938 Panther Pink (C, 1 skein), #312 Black (D, 1 skein)

Hook: US size I/9 (5.5 mm) hook

Notions: Yarn needle 

Special Stitches

Crossed Double Crochet (X-dc): Skip rst 2 dc of next 4-dc group.1 dc in sp between next 2 dc. Ch 2. Working in front of dc just made, 1 dc in sp between 2 skipped dc.

Yoh = Yarn over hook

Pattern Notes

Blanket is made from 16 squares. Each square is edged and then squares are arranged as shown in Assembly Diagram and joined together. Ch 3 at beg of rows counts as dc.

Pattern

Square (Make 16: 6 each with A & B and 4 with C)

Ch 33.
1st row: (RS): 2 dc in 5th ch from hook (beg ch. counts as rst dc and skipped ch) 2 dc in each of next ch. *Skip next 2 ch. 2 dc in next 2 ch. Rep from * 5 times. Skip next 2 ch. 1 dc in last ch. Turn. 7 4-dc groups and 1 dc at each end.

2nd row: Ch 3. X-dc in each 4-dc group. 1 dc in top of beg ch-3. Turn. 7 X-dc and 1 dc at each end.

3rd row: Ch 3. 2 dc in each ch of each X-dc across to beg ch-3. 1 dc in top of beg ch-3. Turn. 7 4-dc groups and 1 dc at each end.

4th to 13th rows: Repeat last 2 rows 5 times more. Fasten off.

Edging

1st rnd: With RS facing, join D with sl st in end of rst row. *Working in ends of rows, 2 hdc in each row* across first side. Working across top edge, (2 hdc. Ch 3. 2 hdc) in sp between rst dc and rst 4-dc group (corner made). (4 hdc in sp between next two 4-dc groups) 6 times. (2 hdc. Ch 3. 2 hdc) in sp between last 4-dc group and last dc (corner made). Rep from * to * across other side. Working in opposite side of foundation ch, (2 hdc. Ch 3. 2 hdc) in sp between rst ch-2 sp (corner made). (4 hdc in next ch-2 sp) 6 times. (2 hdc. Ch 3. 2 hdc) in last ch-2 sp (corner made). Join with sl st in rst hdc. 12 4-hdc groups. 17 2-hdc groups and 4 ch-3 sp corners. Fasten o .

Assembly

With right sides facing, arrange all squares as shown in Assembly Diagram.

Horizontal Join (RS): Holding rst squares of Strips 1 and 2 with WS tog and working through both thicknesses, join D with sc in rst corner. **Ch 2. 1 sc in sp between next 2 hdc and rst 4-hdc group. *Ch 4. 1 sc in sp between next two 4-hdc groups. Rep from * 4 times more. Ch 4. 1 sc in sp between last 4-hdc group and next 2 hdc. Ch 2. 1 sc in next corner**. Ch 2. 1 sc in rst corner of next squares. Rep from ** to ** once more. Fasten o . Rep Horizontal Join to join remaining strips.

Vertical Join (RSA): Holding rst squares of Columns 1 and 2 with WS tog and working through both thicknesses, join D with sc in rst corner. *Ch 2. 1 sc between next two 2-hdc groups. Rep from * to next corner. Ch 2. 1 sc in next corner**. Ch 2. 1 sc in corner of next square. Rep from * across ending at **. Fasten o . Repeat Vertical Join to join remaining columns.

Finishing

Border Round: With RS of top edge facing, join D with sl st in rst outer corner. Ch 2 (does not count as st). (2 hdc. Ch 3. 2 hdc) in same corner as sl st working across top edge. **Skipping vertical joins, *(4 hdc in sp between next 2 hdc groups) across to last corner before next vertical join. 2 hdc in last corner. 2 hdc in first corner of next square. Rep from * across, ending last repeat at next outer corner. (2 hdc. Ch 3. 2 hdc) in next outer corner. Working across side, skipping horizontal joins, (2 hdc in sp between next two 2-hdc groups) across to next outer corner**. (2 hdc. Ch 3. 2 hdc) in next outer corner. Working across lower edge, rep from ** to ** once more. Join with sl st in rst hdc. Fasten off.

    The crossed double crochet does not make any sense to me. What does dc in space between next 2 dc mean. What space?
