Materials
Yarn: Handy Hands Lizbeth Size 10 Crochet Thread (100% Egyptian Cotton; 122 yards [112 meters]/(25 grams): 10-655 Wedgewood Lt. (A), 1 ball; 10-142 Turquoise Twist (B), 1 ball; 10-162 Purple Iris Fusion (C), 1 ball
Hook: Steel hook 8 (1.5 mm)
Notions: Agate Pendant (2¼” long x 1” wide); silver eye pins at least 1½” long (15); 6x8mm clear glass beads (15); 6/0 glass seed beads (46 total: 22 purple, 24 blue); necklace clasp; 8mm jump rings (2); jewelry pliers; embroidery needle
Pattern
Square Motif (make 9)
Make 4 motifs with B, 4 motifs with C, and 1 motif with Rnds 1-2 in A and Rnd 3 in B.
Ch 5, join with sl st to form ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, (ch 3, 3 dc) 3 times in ring, join with sl st to 3rd ch of starting ch-3.
Rnd 2: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in next 2 sts, (3 sc in next ch-3 sp, sc in next 3 dc) around, ending with sl st in first sc.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, sc in same st and in next 3 sts, ch 3, sk next st, sc in next st, (sc in next 4 sts, ch 3, sk next st, sc in next st) around, ending with sc in last 2 sts, sl st in first sc.
Fasten off.
Pendant Backing
With A, ch 13.
Rnd 1: Work 2 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next 10 chs, 2 sc in last ch, now working around other side of beginning ch, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 10 sts, 2 sc in last st – 28 sts.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc in first st, sc in next 10 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 10 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts – 32 sts.
Rnd 3: Sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 11 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 11 sts, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts, sl st in first st – 36 sts.
Rnd 4: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 9 sts, hdc in next st, dc in next st, 2 dc in next 7 sts, dc in next st, hdc in next st, sc in next 9 sts, 2 sc in next st, 2 hdc in next st, dc in next st, sl st to top of starting ch-3 – 47 sts.
Rnd 5: Ch 5, tr in same st, dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, dc in next 41 sts, 2 dc in next st, dc in next st, join with sl st to 4th ch of starting ch-5. Fasten off.
Rnd 6: With B, join with sc to top ch-1 sp, (ch 1, sc) in same sp, (sc in sp between current st and next st) 18 times, (sc in next st, sc in sp between current st and next st) 15 times, sc in next 18 sts, join with sl st to first sc. Fasten off.
Rnd 7: With C, join with sl st to first sc of Rnd 6, (ch 3, sk next 2 sts, sl st in next st) around, ending with sl st in last sc of Rnd 6. Fasten off.
Note: You may need to sk 1 or 3 sts at end of Rnd 7 to end C edging in last sc of Rnd 6.
Finishing
Steam block and pin all square motifs at corners so dry to nice square shape. Let dry completely. Steam block Pendant backing.
Optional: Apply fabric stiffener to back of each motif and let dry completely to make pieces more rigid.
Small Eye Pin Lengths
Using photo as a guide, thread beads onto 10 eye pins in following order:
Purple seed bead, glass clear bead, turquoise seed bead.
Small Center Eye Pin Length
Thread beads onto one eye pin in this order:
Turquoise seed bead, glass clear bead, turquoise seed bead.
Large Eye Pin Length
Thread beads onto 4 eye pins in this order:
3 Turquoise seed beads, glass clear bead, 3 purple seed beads
Using pliers, bend other end of eye pin to form a loop and cut off excess wire
Gently open all loops and link to motifs as shown in photo and diagram joining side with turquoise beads to turquoise motifs and side with purple beads to purple motifs. Continue in same manner joining eye pins to eye pins (see Diagram).
Join clasp parts to each end of necklace using jump rings.
Using embroidery needle sew Agate Pendant to Pendant Backing and sew loop of Small Center Eye Pin (with only turquoise seed beads) to top of pendant backing.
