Poinsettia Pizzazz Pillow

Size: 15 inches diameter x 5 inches H

Gauge: Gauge is really not important to design. It is approximately: 6 sts and 6 rows = 2 [5 cm] in single crochet.

Materials

Super bulky weight yarnYarn: Softee chunky (100% acrylic; 108 yards [99 meters] / 3.5 ounces [100 grams]): #28532 wine (MC 6 skeins), #28237 dark green (CC 2 skeins)

Hook: US size J/10 6.0 mm

Notions: 40-50 gold metallic 8mm round beads, 10 safety pins, tapestry needle, hand sewing needle and wine-colored sewing thread.

Special Stitch

Single crochet join (sc join): With slip knot on hook, insert hook into indicated stitch, yarn over, pull up loop, yarn over, pull through both loops on hook.

Pattern Notes

Pattern is worked from center outward in rounds with 5 petals worked back and forth in rows.

Weave in ends as work progresses.

Chain-1 at beginning of rows or rounds does not count as a stitch, unless otherwise noted.

Join with a slip stitch unless otherwise noted.

Do not turn at end of rounds, unless otherwise noted.

Pattern

Large Poinsettia

Make 2 each using MC and CC.

Center

Make a slip ring.

Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 1 (see Pattern Notes), 10 sc in ring, join (see Pattern Notes). (10 sc)

Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, 2 sc in each st around, join in beg sc.  (20 sc)

Rnd 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next st, [2 sc in next st, sc in next st] around, join in beg sc.  (30 sc)

Rnd 4: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in next 2 sts, [2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts] around, join in beg sc. (40 sc)

First Petal

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next 5 sts, leave remaining sts on center unworked, turn. (6 sc)

Row 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in first st, sc in each st across to within last st, 2 sc in last st, turn.  (8 sc)

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Rows 4-7: [Work rows 2 & 3] twice. (12 sc)

Row 8: Rep row 3.

Row 9: Ch 1, sc2tog in first 2 sts, sc in each st across to within last 2 sts, sc2tog in last 2 sts, turn. (10 sc)

Row 10: Ch 1, sc in each st across, turn.

Rows 11-14: [Work rows 9 & 10] twice. (6 sc)

Row 15: Rep row 9. (4 sc)

Row 16: Ch 1, sc2tog in first 2 sts, sc2tog in last 2 sts.  (2 sc)

Row 17: Ch 1, sc2tog in rem 2 sts, place a safety pin in beg ch-1. Fasten off.  (1 sc)

2nd Petal

Row 1: With Rnd 4 of center RS facing, sk next 2 sts, sc join in next st, sc in next 5 sts, turn. (6 sc)

Rows 2-17: Rep rows 2-17 of First Petal.

3rd-5th Petals

Rep rows 1-17 of 2nd petal just made.

Border

Rnd 1: With one poinsettia RS facing and using matching yarn, sc join in marked ch-1 sp of any tip, (ch 1, sc) in same sp, place a safety pin in ch-1 just made, working stitches evenly spaced in ends of rows, work 16 sc along left side edge of same petal to within rnd 4, [sc2tog in next 2 sts of rnd 4, place a safety pin in sc just made, work 16 sc along right side edge of next petal to marked ch-1 sp of next tip, (sc, ch 1, sc) in ch-1 sp, place a safety pin in ch-1 sp just made, work 16 sc along left side edge of same petal to rnd 4] 4 times, sc2tog in next 2 sts of rnd 4, place a safety pin in sc just made, work 16 sc along right side edge of next petal, join in beg sc. Rep last rnd to add border to 2nd matching color poinsettia.

Assembly

Rnd 1: Stack one poinsettia RS facing onto RS of same color poinsettia matching petal tips, place a pin through both layers in ch-1 sp of each tip, working through both layers with matching yarn, sl st join (see Special Stitches) in first st to left of marked ch-1 sp of any tip, [sl st in each st to within next marked st bet petals, sk marked st, sl st in each st to within next marked ch-1 of next tip, sl st in marked ch-sp] around, join in beg sl st. Fasten off.  (175 sl sts)

Medium Poinsettia

Make 2 using MC.

Center

Rnds 1-4: Rep rnds 1-4 of Large Layer.

First Petal

Rows 1-4: Rep rows 1-4 of Large Poinsettia First Petal. (10 sc)

Row 5-6: Rep rows 6-7 of Large Poinsettia First Petal. (12 sc)

Rows 7-15: Rep rows 9-17 of Large Poinsettia First Petal. (1 sc).

Fasten off.

2nd Petal

Row 1: Rep Large Poinsettia 2nd Petal Row 1.

Rows 2-15: Rep rows 2-15 of Medium Poinsettia First Petal just made.

3rd-5th Petals

Rows 1-15: Rep rows 1-15 of 2nd petal just made.

Border

Make 2 using MC.

Center

Rnds 1-3: Rep rnds 1-3 of Large Layer. (30 sc).

First Petal

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in first st, sc in next 3 sts, turn. (4 sc)

Rows 2-4: [Work row 2 of Large Layer First Petal] 3 times. (10 sc)

Rows 5-6: [Work row 3 of Large Layer First Petal] twice.

Rows 7-13: Rep rows 11-17 of Large Layer First Petal. Fasten off. (1 sc)

2nd Petal

Row 1: With Rnd 4 RS facing, sk next 2 sts, sc join in next st, sc in next 3 sts, turn. (4 sc)

Rows 2-13: Rep rows 2-13 of First Petal just made.

3rd-5th Petals

Rows 1-13: Rep rows 1-13 of 2nd petal just made.

Border

Beaded Center

Make 1 with MC.

Rnd 1: Rep rnd 1 of Large Poinsettia. Fasten off. (10 sc)

Use hand sewing needle and double strand wine thread to sew 40-50 beads or as many as desired to center. Place Center on one Small Poinsettia and use hand sewing needle and wine thread to sew in position.

Assembly

Rnd 2: With beaded center small poinsettia RS facing onto RS of 2nd small poinsettia, rep same as for Large Poinsettia Assembly Rnd 1.  (135 sl sts)

Finishing

With all MC poinsettias RS facing, place large poinsettia on a flat surface, alternating tip positions between tips of previous poinsettia, stack poinsettias decreasing in size and ending with small poinsettia. Cut 2 1-yard lengths of MC, *thread one end of one strand through tapestry needle, insert needle very closely beside any outer bead of Center and through rem 2 poinsettias, pulling yarn 1/2 way through. Thread opposite end of same strand through needle, insert needle under beaded center to outer edge on opposite side of Center and down through rem poinsettias. Turn piece to WS and pull both yarn ends very tightly and knot to secure.* Rep from * to * with 2nd strand MC, inserting needle crosswise from 1st strand placement to form an +.

Turn poinsettia over, with tip positions of CC poinsettia alternating from large MC poinsettia, use CC to sew RS of CC poinsettia to WS poinsettia.
