Leaf Motif Wrap

Combine simple stitches, leaf patterns and funky chunky beads, to make this vibrant, summertime shawl. Layer it with a simple white dress to make a bold statement.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: 20” wide x 50” excluding trim, or approx 84” long including trim, after blocking

Gauge: 11 sts and 10 rows = 4” [10 cm] in pattern stitch after light blocking

Materials

Yarn: Plymouth Yarn Company Encore (75% acrylic, 25% wool; 200 yards [182 meters]/100 grams): #472 Cantaloupe (5 balls)
Hook: US size J/10 (6.5 mm) hook or size needed to obtain gauge
Notions: 12 3/8” (1 cm) dark orange beads, with hole large enough for yarn to comfortably pass through, tapestry needle

Abbreviations

Bead Chain (Bch): Make a chain st as usual, catching the working yarn where it comes out of a pre-strung bead, holding the bead in place.

Pattern Notes

Always work your first row of sts in the back (or bump) of the foundation chain, rather than the front or V of the foundation chain. It provides a much neater edge to work in later.
Ch-3 counts as 1 dc.

Row 1 (WS): Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, turn. (61 dc)
Row 2 (RS): Sc in each dc across, ch 3, turn.
Row 3: Dc in each sc across, ch 1, turn.
Rep rows 2-3 for pattern until work measures 50” from start, ending with a Row 3. End off.

Leaf Trim – First Half

Pre-string 6 beads onto your working yarn for use during final row. Work across last row made.
Row 1: Join yarn with sl st in first dc, (ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch aross, sk 1 sc on last dc row, sc in each of next 11 dc) 5 times, ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Turn.
Row 2: Sl st across each of 9 sc just made, ch 8, [dtr in opposite side of first sc of 9 made in ch, (ch 1, dtr in next sc) twice, (ch 2, dtr in next sc) 3 times, ch 2, tr in next sc, ch 2, dc in next sc, ch 2 sc in next sc, sl st loosely in each of next 11 sc, sc in next sc (first of 9 sc in the column of scs), ch 2, dc in next sc, ch 2, tr in next sc, (ch 2, dtr in next sc) twice, sl st in adjacent ch-2 sp of previous leaf made, (ch 2, dtr in next sc) twice, (ch 1, dtr in next sc) twice, ch 3] 5 times eliminating final ch-3 on fifth rep, ch 1, dtr in top of last sc column. Turn.
