Colorblock Plum Scarf

Nothing says summer like linen and blocks of color. The beauty of this scarf lies in the color and texture of the fiber, so choose your favorite summertime colors and start crocheting.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: 64 x 11” [162 x 28 cm], excluding fringe

Gauge: 16 sts and 11 rows = 4” [10 cm] in pattern st after wet blocking

Materials

Yarn: Universal Yarn Fiber Natura (100% linen; 137 yds [125 meters]/50 gms); 08 purple (MC, 2 hanks), 07 lilac (CC1, 2 hanks), 14 white (CC2, 1 hank)
Hook: US size H/8 (5.0 mm) hook

Special Stitches

Split half double crochet (Spl hdc): Yarn over, insert hook into body of designated stitch between 3 vertical threads to left and 1 vertical thread to right of hook tip, yarn over, pull up loop, yarn over, pull through all 3 loops on hook.

Pattern Notes

Pattern is worked horizontally from edge to edge, with fringe added upon completion.
Ch 3 at beginning of each row counts as spl hdc, ch 1 throughout unless otherwise noted.
It is better to work blocks of color by exact row count as opposed to measuring to ensure same color block size on each side of scarf.

Pattern

First Color Block

With MC, ch 45.
Row 1 (RS): Hdc in 5th ch from hook (counts as initial hdc, ch 1, hdc), *ch 1, sk next ch, hdc in next ch. Rep from * across. Turn. (22 hdc)

Continuing in CC1, rep row 3 of first color block for 35 rows.

Row 36 (color changing row): Work as for first color block row 28, changing to CC2 at end of row. Fasten off CC1.

Finishing

Weave in all ends. Wet block piece to measurement.

Fringe

Cut 86 12” [30.5 cm] lengths from both MC and CC1. Create 86 fringe bundles consisting of 1 length from each MC and CC1, folding each bundle in half.

Attaching Fringe

Starting at left side of either short edge of scarf, *insert hk from back to front at first hdc, pull fringe bundle through from front to back at fold. With fingers, pull fringe bundle ends through fold loop and pull taught. Rep from * across edge of scarf – 43 fringe bundles attached.
Attach fringe on opposite short edge of scarf as for first short edge.
Once all fringe bundles are attached, fold scarf in half and trim any uneven fringe ends.
