Mallory utilizes a stitch pattern that is a combination of half double, double, and treble crochets between the posts. A row of foundation half double crochet begins the cowl and a row of extended half double crochet ends it, with luxuriously drapey rows of open semi-filet crochet in between. This plush, lightweight cowl hangs around the neck in two loops and works up quickly without being bulky.

Bernat velvet yarns are the greatest yarns to work with & make beautiful scarves. And YES, you can do it!!!
I am confused by Row “2: dc in top 2 lps of stitch below”. What does “stitch below” mean here? Does it mean the previous row worked? I was confused when starting the pattern because the row below is the hdc row (if started with hdc instead of fhpc).
Thanks to anyone who can explain…
Hello! I’ve reached out to the designer for advice and she or I will reply as soon as possible. Thanks! – Nicola, Editor
Hi Laurel! After finishing row 1 by making the slip stitch to join your work into a circle, chain two to start row 2. You will have the circle of stitches from row 1, with the chain 2 coming up out of the circle of stitches. The first dc of row two is placed through both of the top loops of the stitch that is kind of directly under the chain, just slightly to the left of where your chain comes out from the circle of stitches from row. 1. Sorry that the phrasing “in the top two loops” is kind of confusing….it means to place the stitch as you normally would for a dc, i.e., not just through the back loop only. Best of luck! – Nicola, Editor
I thought it was a pretty pattern, now if i can do it??
