Checkers Pattern
With first color, ch 3, work 2 dc, carrying 2nd color along by working over the strand. Draw 2nd color through last loop of last dc made. Work 3 dc with 2nd color, carrying first color along by working over strand. Draw first color through last loop of last dc made. Work 3 dc with first color, carrying 2nd color along by working over the strand, and drawing 2nd color through last loop of last dc made. When drawing new color through last loop, pull gently on strand to avoid bunching up of carried yarn. Continue in the same manner to the end of the round or row.
At the beginning of a row or round, you will begin with a ch 3 in whatever color is needed. Just before you make the first chain, cross the strand of the other color over the working yarn, to bring it up to the height of the row so it can be carried along.
Abbreviations
Hdc2tog: Half double crochet two together
BL: Back loop
Dc2tog: Double crochet two together
Pattern Notes
Use a stretchy yarn for this pattern.
Use the Hdc2tog method to work hdc decrease for less bulk:
To avoid tangling yarn on checkers rounds: place the two balls aside, one in front and one in back. When you change colors along the row, always keep the strands of each color in the same order, one in front and one in back.
No turns at ends of rnds until rnd 7. Turn at ends of rnds or rows till 15, thereafter no turns.
If the cuff of the mitt is too tight, use a larger hook for those rounds only.
