Add some interest to any table setting with the Purple Passion Mat. Made up of a center circle, three outer strips and a final edging round, this intermediate project will look great on any table as a centerpiece under a flower vase or candelabra.

Pattern Notes
The center circle is worked first, followed by the outer strips which are joined to the mat during the working process.
Special Stitch
Needle Join: Lengthen loop on hook to 6″, cut loop at top. Thread tapestry needle with attached end. Insert needle under 2 strands of first dc/turning chain, and then back into the center of last stitch (where thread is coming from). Tighten carefully to bring first and last stitches together.
Pattern
Center Circle
Make a magic loop. Ch 2 (counts as 1 dc), 11 dc into loop, join with needle to 2nd ch, fasten off. (12 dc)
Pull center loop tight and secure.
Strip 1
Ch 9.
Row 1: 1 Dc in 6th ch from hook, 1 dc in each ch to end (4 dc), ch 2, sl st in any dc of center circle, ch 2, turn.
Row 2: 1 Dc in each dc of Strip, ch 5, turn.
Row 3: 1 Dc in each dc, ch 2, sl st in next dc of circle, ch 2, turn.
Rows 4-24: Repeat rows 2-3 10 times and then row 2 once more, omitting the ch 5 at the end of row 24.
Fasten off.
Strip 2
Ch 10.
Row 1: 1 Dc in 6th ch from hook, sk 1 ch, V-st in next ch, sk 1 ch, 1 dc in last ch, ch 2, 1 dc in any free ch 5 loop of Strip 1, ch 2, turn.
Row 2: 1 Dc in 1st dc of Strip 2, 1 V-st in next V-st, 1 dc in last dc, ch 5, turn.
Row 3: 1 Dc in 1st dc, 1 V-st in next V-st, 1 dc in last dc, ch 2, 1 dc in same ch 5 loop as last dc, ch 2, turn.

Edging
3 Sc in 1st ch 5 loop, 11 dc in next ch 5 loop, *3 sc in next ch 5 loop, 11 dc in next ch 5 loop; rep from * around, join with needle join to 1st sc.
Finishing
Join first and last rows of Strips.
Weave in ends and block to size.
To block: Pin mat to size, spray with water and leave to dry.
