HDC Beg Cluster – Yo, insert hook, yo, pull up loop (3 loops on hook), yo, pull through 2 loops (2 loops on hook), yo, insert hook, yo, pull up loop, yo, pull through 2 loops (3 loops on hook), yo, insert hook, yo, pull up loop, yo, pull through 2 loops (4 loops on hook), yo, pull through all loops.
5-ch picot – Ch 5, insert hook in the 5th ch from hook, yo and draw through loop.

Zigzag Join – Lay 2 squares next to each other with RS facing up. Join yarn in corner of Square 1 and ch 2, sl st in corner of Square 2, ch 4, working at a diagonal angle, sl st in Square 1, ch 4, sl st in Square 2. Continue in this matter across to corner of first square, ch 3, sl st in corner of second square. Fasten off.

With larger hook, ch 6, sl st in first ch to make a ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 4, (dc into ring, ch 1) 11 times, sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-4.
Rnd 2: Sl st in next ch, ch 2, HDC Beg Cluster in same ch, ch 2, HDC Cluster in next ch-1 sp, ch 3, *tr in next dc, ch 3, (HDC Cluster in next ch-1 sp, ch 2) twice, HDC Cluster in next ch-1 sp, ch 3; rep from * twice more, tr in next dc, ch 3, HDC Cluster in next ch-1 sp, ch 2, sl st in top of beg ch-2.
Rnd 3: Ch 1, *sc in top of HDC Beg Cluster, work 5-ch picot, ch 2, work 5 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, tr in next tr st, work 3-ch picot, ch 1, work 5 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 2, sk next HDC Cluster and ch-2 sp; rep from * 3 more times, sl st in first sc of rnd.

With smaller hook, ch 8, sl st in first ch to make a ring.

Rnd 2: Ch 3, work 3 dc in first ch-3 sp, *ch 3, work 4 dc in next ch-3 sp; rep from * 6 more times, ch 3, sl st in top of beg ch-3.
Rnd 3: Ch 4, *work 6 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, work 6 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 1; rep from * twice more, work 6 dc in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, work 5 dc in last ch-3 sp, sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch.
Rnd 4: *Ch 3, sc between 3rd and 4th dc of next 6-dc cluster, ch 3, (work 2 dc, ch 3, 2 dc) in next ch-3 sp, ch 3, sc between 3rd and 4th dc of next 6-dc cluster, ch 3, sc in ch-1 sp; rep from * twice more, replacing last sc with sl st in base of beg ch-3.
Fasten off.
Finishing
Block all motifs.
Assemble motifs, using photo as guide.
Join all Motif 1 into a strip using the zigzag join method.
Join all Motif 2 into a strip using the zigzag join method.
Join the strip of Motif 1 with Motif 2 using the zigzag method.
Seam short ends to close the cowl using the zigzag join method. Weave in all ends and block cowl.
